Im looking at the nylon rope on http://www.extremerestraints.com/wrist-and-ankle-restraints_11/premium-black-nylon-bondage-rope_232.htm

which size is good just for learning and doing basic rope bondage

It depends what you're doing with them. Are you doing self bondage? Are you doing simple wraps or intricate shibari? I would say two of the 10, one of the 25, and one of the 50 would be good starters. Although when he does a rope corset on me, that takes the better part of a 100' piece.

What are you using to learn this? I strongly recommend Jay Wiseman's Erotic Bondage to teach you safety. You want to wrap things repeatedly, spreading the pressure out and being able to fit two fingers under the wraps. Forget about knots, they're the least important.

Beyond that, the Two Knotty Boys have some youtube tutorials. Always pay attention to the color of the skin and the temperature of it. Go to the drugstore and buy EMT shears, they'll cut rope but not skin. And never tie anything around your neck.

Speaking as someone still learning the ropes, so to speak, too much rope is worse than too too little, as least in the beginning.

If you are just learning rope go with cheapie nylon in small lengths. Find a few knots you like and work them until you can do them in your sleep. Then start going for looks bondage wise (which means you WILL need more rope). Don't feel bad about using cheap ass rope until you get the experience you need to go for the more expensive kinds. Personally, I love silk rope. It's not for amateurs.

The one in the drawing says 7 meters. Since one meter is 3'3", that translates to about 23'. Get the 25 footer. 10' really can't do much more than tie both your legs together.

However buying rope from sex shops gets pricey. Go to home depot or Lowes and feel the different ropes. When you find one that feels good to you, buy 25'. It will be significantly cheaper.

I'm currently typing with my nose, finding the 'shift' key dificult to use, and I'm no doubt going to be late for work!

First, if you want to learn rope I suggest you go with hemp rope, not nylon.

Second, the only way to know "how much rope" for your needs is to try things out and cut the pieces to your own specifications.

Might I suggest "Raw Organic Unique" as the source for you.

I'm finding 35' about right for the various harnesses that I put carol in. More elaborate ones would be 50'. Shorter segments are useful for binding just the wrists or ankles or somesuch as well as "add-ons" to the harness.

I found 25 ft to be a little too short .. So, I would go with 30.. and I like 100% nylon that I dye with the scarlet red available from wally world :)

25 feet of rope is a lot for someone new to rope bondage. The entire process is somewhat useless until you can tie a good knot. Hence my advice.

And yeah, nylon is super shitty rope. Which is why someone with a clue would never use it. But you have to learn somehow. Please let's try to remember there are people who have never tied a knot before.

Nylon is good b/c it is incredibly cheap, so if you cut a bunch of ten foot pieces to practice with, you are not out much money when you are ready to move on and toss them away. Plus, nylon is hard to hold a knot. If you can get it knotted well with nylon, you know cotton, or hemp or silk is going to hold well.

Just my advice for a rope newbie.

Exactly my thinking CP.

Sure, I did my research and found all the wonderful attributes of hemp. But the bottom line was some pretty nylon rope was available at $5 for 50' at the home depot (half a kilometer from my house). The hemp rope was not readily available anywhere despite this being a harbor town. Hemp rope ordered over the internet tends to come with the "sex markup".

AND, it's not like you can't tie a perfectly fine harness with the nylon rope. AND, as you said, I can hack up that 50' of rope without remorse because it's so cheap. And finally, if it turns out I groove on bondage and want better rope, then it's not like that nylon rope is worthless. It's still rope and useful for all the usual things like tying down our kayaks, etc.

Personally, my end opinion on the push for hemp is that it's probably better, but the big "you must use hemp" message has more to do with fancy toys than usability. It's exactly the same as me expecting myself to shoot a decent game of billiards with a bar cue despite the fact that my personal cue is substantially better and more expensive.

Jeff, I so agree.

Realize, I am a rope dyslexic. I cannot tie a good knot to save my soul. I think a big part of that is I am directionally challenged, and knot tying is all about directions. I am trying to train myself, but it is not an easy learning curve for me.

I would love to be really great with rope, I love how it looks and how it feels, it's just so sensual. But to not admit I have limitations with this skill, is to be....even more idiotic.

So my advice holds: buy cheapie nylon and learn to tie a knot. Master the basics before you think you can move on.

Just my fucking three cents tonight as I work on our dinner.

Hemp over the internet sometimescomeswith a sex markup, but generally it's simply expensive because it's a f*cking lot of work to cook, dry, break in and burn raw hemp into hemp for bondage. I suggest you try to prepare some 200 meters yourself, and then decide whether or not it's a rip off.

Of course, there are also suppliers that actually do rip you off.

Actually, if you want to do shibari, you can't tie a perfectly fine harness with nylon, let alone suspend someone. If you use western techniques, nylon is a fine choice.

Hemp and jute are absolute musts for shibari because they combine some qualities (strength, tooth, not too much stretch, natural aesthetics) of which nylon only posesses two. Again, if you're not interested in doing shibari, you don't need hemp or jute, and nylon is a fine choice.

The other reason we're not investing in hemp is that I have really strong hay fever. And the odds are that I'll be allergic to all that expensive rope. Nylon doesn't set off my allergies.

I am not a "rope expert" , but I like nylon. cheap, washable and dyable.. Not so much for hemp (especially the washable part).. and nylon can be used for underwater bondage :)
100 ft at lowes. cut in half .. the another one in half. gives you 50, 25 ,25. another 100 ft and you do 4 10's and 2 30's . just my 2 cents.

And not that many knots are required. I wrap the subbie around so much that a knot is at the end just so the rope doesn't come out, Not to hold something tight.

For that kind of harness? An acquaintance of mine used to pick up $3, 50' lengths of poly rope from Walmart for that kind of thing. I believe he liked it because he could cut it loose and fuck her fast without feeling like he was wasting money.

Go to Walmart, your local hardware store, whatever. You want rope that won't chafe too much in important places, is at least 1/4 wide, and comes in lengths of at least 50 feet. Beyond that, get whatever is cheap. I like nylon, but you could even use cotton clothesline for this kind of thing.

A hint: rope they sell for bondage is not different from rope they sell for other things. If you want silky black nylon rope, by all means, find some, but I promise it will cost less if you don't buy it through a sex shop.
