Status: offline 		My local paper is the Denver Post, which has on online edition.  They of course ran an article on the NY gay marriage bill, and I was able to see comments from locals on the bill.

Yesterday I was surprise that public sentiment as expressed in the comments was strongly against the bill.  Today, the comments seem to be in favor, but not strongly - perhaps 60-40.  Since the prevailing opinion on the cm P&R forum is unanimous in favor or nearly so, I was surprised at how conservative local opinion was.

How about you?  If your local paper has an online edition that allows positive and negative comments to news, what is your impression on comments about the bill?  Please give your location so we can get a look at public sentiment across the nation.

Status: offline 		It has not been covered in my local paper-  online.  When it is- they do not allow comments on ANY story.  My guess is 70% against it.   20% for it.   10% unsure.

Atlanta native here. Have lived in several locations across the SE, etc.

I have never properly understood the gay marriage thing to begin with. I am still learning, so maybe it is in fact a necessary progression. But it always came across to me as some forced justification or forced acceptance of homosexuality that was never needed for myself or a good many other people that I know.

I just never understood some people having such 'issue' with homosexuality in the first place, nor the forcing of 'acceptance' for those incapable of it by others. Most of us got our head wrapped around that issue in our teen years, like many other things. I have no proof, but I almost think that gay/lez haters are even a smaller percentage of the population than homosexuals themselves. Don't let the noisiness of the 'anti' crowd be mistaken for actual numbers.

People of whatever sexual orientation have lived together for millenia. If the modern 'legal gay marriage' makes some people think they have invented some brand new societal or civilizational  item, then so be it. I'm not going to go out of my way to oppose it.

PS

Looking back on it, I don't know if I've ever lived further than a 1/2 mile away from some gay or lesbian couple in the neighborhood in my whole life, including the next door gay couple for 8 years.

Are people actually this freaking blind?

How many legal rights are awarded to married partners? 

If partners were allowed those rights without the ceremony of marriage then gay marriage would never be an issue.  Since the State in a legal capacity recognizes the marriage and awards certain rights and privileges to the marriage it becomes a legal issue.

Yes, I am actually this dense.

I've never understood the legal distinction or more especially the legal advantage for any married couple to begin with (which rules have been changed noticeably through time), anymore than I could understand what is different now in the same-sex issue than has been the case for thousands of years.

But thanks for overlooking the gist and the main issue of the previous post in any regards.

Not my job to educate the dense.

I think the instances where gay partners have been shut out of medical and financial decisions by other family members have been well documented.  These are the types of things that could never be done to a spouse.

If you claim not to understand it now, then you never will.

These are in fact among other things that have been legally done from one spouse to another in various states. If you don't even know how different the laws are from one state to the next, then I think that you are wise in stating it as not your job to 'educate' others on the matter.

Damn, now you tell me. Does this mean I have to stop being happy about it and start writing letters? And what about my gay conservative friends? Will they have to write letters too?

Seems like a lot of work just to make some bigot on cm right about something.

I have to agree with you on that one, boi.

This is different territory here. Why some take it as a 'liberal issue' is beyond me. But pardon my 'obtuseness' in any regard.

If this needs to happen, then it needs to happen. Times change, etc., if we now need a law to allow what has happened for millenia, etc., so be it.

I'm despondent over some not getting the point at all in this matter, and ignoring the increased awareness over the last 30 years, but we have to 'sell what's on the cart' here, as they say, so I'm all good for it.

I just dislike it when a law is enforced to do what much of society is doing or accepting already, I hope you get that.

Sorry, I might be too caught up in past efforts here. The ones that changed people's thinking.
