I am 23 minutes into the first episode of Star Gate Universe and it is a temporal mess, with disjointed, chaotic happenings and flashbacks. Is that to be expected for the whole episode/series? If so, I'd rather not watch that series.

I have now seen the first seven episodes of the first season - and they suck. They had better lose those five ancient-communicate-instantly-with-Earth-stones in a hurry. I guess that they had scarcely any budget to work with. In the last episode I was watching some pop show on Earth and a couple who were talking in a car on Earth. Boring.

I can report that at the end of episode 10 of the first season it got interesting. Most of the earlier part of that episode was still boring, though.

I have seen the remainder of the first season - episodes 11-20 - and they are much better than the first nine episodes. Acceptable, in fact.
I still think that them ancient communication stones and all Earth scenes were a big mistake. I dunno who directed the first nine episodes, but I hope that he has since gone fishing and won't come back ever.

I have seen both seasons now. There was little to no line in it. Nor could I discern anything of extraordinary value in it.
Nevertheless it eventually did grow into something that was entitled to existence in its own right. I can understand that some people rued at its discontinuance after two seasons. I also understand those who said 'Good riddance'.
With other authors (during the first nine episodes) and with another premise and more budget this might have been a better series.
