Recently, I was trying to describe a telephone book to a 25-yr-old co-worker. She couldn't fathom why people would want to just give their numbers out to be published in a book that anyone could just look in.

Same co-worker, when I mentioned the days where I didn't have an answering machine. (Horrified) "How did you know when someone had called????" Uh, they called back?

"No call waiting!?!? What if you called someone and got a busy signal???" You tried again later?

I was going to tell her about rotary dial, but I was afraid she'd have to be hospitalized. [&:]

Remember charades? Where you started by pantomiming "movie" by pretending you were holding a camera in one hand and making a cranking motion with the other hand? We tried that once, and the young ones didn't know what that meant. They pantomime "movie" by pretending they're holding a dvd, dropping it in a drawer, and pushing a button.

I'm going with the "You know you're getting old" thread title theme......if this is really supposed to be about Isaac Hayes, I beg forgiveness for the horrible threadjack [:)]

Try explaining a typewriter.

Shut your mouth !!

Linotype or Linkin Park.........where we at here?

LillyBoPeep -> RE: You know you're getting old... (6/27/2011 12:09:30 PM)

yanno, i don't understand people my age who don't know about phone books and don't know about typewriters. those things were in use when we were growing up, and are still in use in places today. every library i've been to, even in BIG cities, still had at least ONE typewriter. you still get free phone books stacked up on campuses and the phone company still drops one off on your door step (at least in my neighborhood).
i have to wonder where these people have been living!! is there really that much space under rocks?

Ok, you totally know you're getting old when you hear the hair bands you went to high school with on the oldies station.
And when you see an article on this one musician that you had this big fat crush on as a young girl and you realize he's going to be 63 on his next birthday (Rick Springfield. No, rly.).
*DERP*
And looking in the bathroom mirror and finding that first thatch of silver at your temples doesn't help..
That being said, the rumours are true; as some of us have found, life really does begin at 40.. [:)]

Try a mimeograph machine or carbon copies.

Ike was the man

I nominate that one. For what I don't know :-)

Screw that, you don't have to go back that far even. Try explaning a dot matrix printer, or writing your own printer drivers in WordPerfect with Esc codes.

When my son was younger, he was at my place for the weekend.  We'd rented some videos, yeah, another dinosaur, and I asked if he wanted popcorn.  I had microwave popcorn, but no microwave...don't really like 'em.  Anyway, he saw the package of popcorn and asked me how I was going to do it w/o the microwave.  I pulled out a pan and lid and said "Lemme show you how we did it in the STONE AGE!"  I swear, the kid was never as fascinated by anything in his life as much as watching me make popcorn in a pan.  And I didn't burn a single kernel!

Even just talking about things at work makes me feel old....the other day, we were discussing black and white TV....one of the girls mentioned she'd seen Beaver on TV, and I told her that was in syndication....I saw it as the original series!  And if it weren't for Nick, and Cartoon Network, these kids wouldn't even know who Bugs and Crew were!  I told them we used to wake up early on Saturday morning and sped at least the next 4 hours captivated by the cartoons.....not that drivel they spout today!  They were all like "Really?"

Yeah, I'm old....really felling it now after watching my baby get married.  But I've never lost my inner child......and I won't!

I have a rotary phone. It's always a big hit with company - they love to make phone calls on it. It's one of those heavy, black phones....last night I actually had to let the handle swing down and spin to uncoil the cord. It was great.

....sorry to say, I actually bought it at an antique store.

I wonder if anyone remembers the "indiscreet" picture in the big Sears catalogue in the early to mid - 70's.  Men's underwear page, they actually published a photo where it revealed a bit too much of his package.  Of course when we all heard about it everyone couldn't wait to look in the Sears catalogue to see it.   I think mom tore the page out and threw it away when she found out.  .

What can I say, we didn't have internet then.

hmmmmm...I missed that pic.  However, pre-internet.....the women's lingerie section in ANY catalogue was the most perused section by young boys discovering their hormones.

What about 8 track tapes? i found a bunch in a box when were cleaning out my mothers attack after she passed, all the kids--each in their 20s now--were 'what are these?' couldn't find the 8 track player though.

And while I was in the Wally World in Illinois this weekend, I actually saw a woman WRITE OUT a check!  She was an older woman, but even my parents have debit cards, and they are in their late 60's/early 70's.  I didn't think that people even used checks anymore!  I think the last time I wrote one was in 1996!  I use my debit card for EVERYTHING!
