The pups eat Eukanuba. The geriatric bloodhound gets weight loss formula for older large breeds and the youngster is still on euk large breed puppy chow till he's 2.

Great timing, as i am having issues with our dog eating/not eating enough. We have a black lab, not pure bred, a rescue. He's about 3 now..(best estimate) Fully checked out by the vet, no real health issues, but too thin. We've had him about a year. at first.. it was dry food, Science diet as i buy that for my cats, and have always trusted it. he was fine with it. I noticed he was pickey.. smelled and licked and played with a hot dog before eating.. we realized he doesn't like cold things..lol.. He is sensitive to diet changes, throws up.. etc if the formula is changed. a few months ago, he stopped eating enough. Had him checked.. clean bill of health. But skinny! I have never seen a large dog be so picky!! most just inhale whatever is close to them. So, we started some canned food.. one can a day, that worked, for a while, he ate more dry food as well.. now, again, not eating enough. The vet says.. a hungry dog will eat. but his ribs show..and he's just too too thin. he seems to eat the canned food ok. So, do i just feed the canned? find a new vet? stop the canned all together? maybe he thinks he's a cat.. to be so fussy! dog treats are left alone. as are rawhide bones, pigs ears etc. the only thing he likes are real bones.

I've never met a lab who was picky. I hate to say it, but maybe the raw meat diet would appeal to him.

Try being in the room with him. His problem is that he wants to be where they are so he will do that to the exclusion of eating no matter how hungry he is. It cant hurt to try.

Try giving him the food and stay with him, if he doesn't eat it, take it away. As long as there is always food available, he sees no need to eat it. We had the issue with our female Dobie, she was looking at her food and expecting better (previous owners fed her a lot on human food, which isn't too good for dogs), once she noticed that if she doesn't eat it, it's gone, she could eat her dog food. I'm not saying you should starve your dog, but maybe his metabolism doesn't require that much food? I have 2 cats from the same litter, one is a big and muscular tom, the other is a tiny runt, the tiny runt eats about twice as much as his big brother, and yes, they are dewormed and all, just a different metabolism.

My cat has a penchant for tinned tuna, which is ok for me, because the cost is cheaper than proprietry cat foods, which the cat won't eat anyway and therefore presents a waste of money, when it is the local shop is out of cheap tinned tuna. Yeah, I know there is a lot of salt in tinned tuna, and the only butter she likes is salted butter like me, but of the salt, if we can't eat only what is good for us, why should we govern what our furry friends want to eat. Mind, it is debatable whether the proprietry animal foods are edible anyway, or just a way of selling waste product, although I have eaten dog food before now, in a stew one cannot detect it and it was an available option to replace stewing steak. Nobody else noticed either.

Our dogs eat Diamond brand Lamb Meal and Rice Formula dry food, fed twice a day because the silly buggers never did figure out that it's OKAY to stop eating before all the food is gone. The particular brand/formulation is because the JRT is allergic to everything, including both beef and wheat. The cat gets the Diamond brand Indoor Cat formula, just because I wanted her on a better quality food. And the claims that animals eat less and poo less and have better overall condition on higher quality foods are true. She gets to nibble at her food as she likes through the day, and eats about half a cup or so of dry food each day. She's maintaining a healthy weight and good condition on that amount, so I'm good with that. It's half or a bit less than half of what she ate of cheaper stuff, so the overall cost works out to be about the same in the long run. All the animals get occasional treats of raw and cooked meats. The cat tends to get more of the raw meats, simply because what she considers a huge and tasty treat is not even enough for the dogs to taste they'd inhale it so fast. Dogs do usually get the trimmings from our cooked meats, though, as Master usually cuts off and won't eat any fat on his portions. None of the animals will eat veggies, at least not raw ones. And for the most part the veggies I serve at meals are raw or nearly so, so they don't get much chance to check them out cooked. I should get a container of rye and oat grass going, for the cat, as she won't go outside. The dogs eat a fair bit of weeds and grass in the back yard, which they have at will access to via a dog door.

I always felt what your vet told you (and what most vets will tell you) until I met my current dog. I've done the whole "eat what you have or thats it" deal with my picky eater - for months a few months. In the end I would end up measuring because he never seemed like he ate any of it - and quite frankly he wasn't! Daily service size? 1/2 cup, how much he would eat? Tablespoon if that. He got so thin he weighed less then 3lbs (and he at his healthy weight is 6lbs.) still don't understand why he does that - my family fostered quite a few dogs growing up and its the only time I've ever seen a dog really not just get over the whole thing and eat. I think the "they'll eat when they are hungry" is good normal advice but every once and a while it doesn't fit quite right. Have you tried moistening the dry food? (I hate the damn wet vs dry debate since you'll find dental health articles that will say one causes less tartar then the other when it comes to both.) Is the flavor of the wet different then the dry? (Like beef vs chicken?) Perhaps you might want to try a different brand, it may really be an ingredient/ratio or taste thing. While I by no means wish to bash you for feeding SD, the last time I checked their labels a lot of them had a good amount of filler grains in them - maybe the canned just tastes more "beefy".

My kitty Gnocchi eats lately, for dry food, "Purina Beyond One"...it is new and they have coupons in the paper for it lately and she really likes it and meat is the first ingredient too in the ingredients list......Otherwise, I give her some canned food each day but I have learned over time it has to be the kind that is ground up fine and not in chunks as she won't eat anything with morsels, chunks or tidbits in it..she will just lick off all the gravy and leave the meat in that kind...ha ha

My dogs get about a third of whatever I'm eating. Then they have a supply of dry dog food and I occasionally buy some of the more expensive canned dog food for variety.. So, they've had some mcdonald's fries, pizza, lasagna, Doritos, pork chops, cheese, macaroni, burritos, carrots, etc.. in the last week. Hrmmm, some more stuff. One is fat, the other is thin, and she won't eat that much no matter what it is, well except meat, she'll eat that until she throws up if I let her. Works for us.
