i didn't want to hijack another thread, so i'm moving my questions here. this was inspired by LaTigresse's following post:

right now, my dog eats purina beyond. it's the only thing he'll reliably eat. i tried him on Blue which is supposed to be great because of these silly "life source bits," which he seemed to really dislike. i also fed him Pinnacle, which is a pretty great dry food, and he ate it very well as long as i bought (not-so-cost-effective) tiny bags, but once i bought a big bag of it, he turned his nose up. =p

Nutro Max large breed...it cleared up his itchy skin and he really does eat less and poop less. It took a friend of mine 2 years to get me to finally try it.

His coat is gorgeous and he is gorgeous and healthy!

my dog used to eat nutro max senior and nutro natural choice senior, and he stopped eating both of them, too. he did have less poo on that food, though.
i've been pondering switching him back to that. i might get a small bag and see if he'll eat it or if he stops eating it again.
my dog's in good health generally, and always gets comments on his coat. the purina food is the only food he's been "yay!" about when it came time to eat. =p i'm wary of switching him to something else, even if it is a higher quality food.

My cat eats Spots Stew dry, and every morning he gets half of a miniature can of Fancy Feast seafood (any of their seafood varieties). I don't like feeding him Fancy Feast, but it's the only canned food he'll eat, ever since his hospital stay last year. I'm hoping the healthy Spots Stew counteracts the Fancy Feast somehow...but I'll likely gradually try to change the canned stuff back.

Dr. Karen Becker does a great job of explaining what some of these cheaper foods do to our pets, and how natural/fresh foods extend their lives and keep them healthier.

Both (cats and dogs) eat a lot of fresh meat and fish, the dogs tend to prefer theirs cooked, the cats eat it raw.

The dogs also get a lot of bones and pigs' ears (dried) for their teeth, otherwise I have to brush their teeth, as a staple diet for cats and dogs I give them Royal Canin or Purinia dry food, the cats get a lot of fresh chicken or fish on the side, the dogs get one dish a day with plenty of veg, a few grains (no wheat, Dobes are notoriously wheat intolerant and turn into chemical weapons) and bits of fish and/or meat. I usually do a late shop on Saturday where I buy left overs from the fish monger and butcher quite cheap, then do a big cook up and freeze stuff in, we got 2 freezers, one for us and one for pet food.

Typically one meal will be dry food, the other meal will be something cooked with fresh meat/fish/veg. The girl loves carrots, fruit and basically all veg, the boy will try to steal potatoes (maybe he's Irish, he'll even try to steal them raw from the larder).

While the dogs aren't allowed to eat the cat food, the cats sometimes go nuts for the dog food (especially the dried stuff)

When sometimes switching over to another brand (the whole bunch is pretty fussy and after eating the same dry food for a while they turn up their noses, cats and dogs alike), I usually ask for a small sample and test it on Mr Slinky, the ratman. He's a super fussy eater and if he doesn't eat it, I'm pretty sure it's not good, we've tried it with cheap and high brand (the stuff vets recommend) dog and cat food, Mr Rat will always pick the better brand and squirrel it away, but throw the cheap stuff out of the cage.

Teh Kids get Purina indoor formula..

every ONCE in a while they'll get wet food (as a treat).

I've tried them on different dry foods, but it almost always ends up as puke, or refused.

The wet food (regardless of brand) seems to be fine, as long as it isnt chicken... they just do NOT like chicken.

my mutts used to get James Wellbeloved senior kibble. Then a friend of mine explained how a store-own brand of stuff was made in the same place as the JW stuff, using the same ingredients, but sold for just over half the price...so that's what they eat now, and they both love it!

They also get fresh veggies to snack on - I hate fat dogs!

i used nutro natural choice senior as the basis of my mix for my pet rats (twas super convenient because the dog would eat it back then, too), because the protein levels were a good match for their needs. (lately i've REALLY been missing the finkheads. =p) anything else was either left in their bin feeder or kicked out of the cage.

i switched my dog away from canned food because he wouldn't eat anything. he'd just let it sit in his bowl until i had to throw it away so it was a waste of money. the ONLY canned food he would eat was pedigree chopped chicken flavor; anything else, even if it was fairly "fancy," would be left behind.
one wet food he will eat is Freshpet Select, which is in a fridge in the pet food section of the grocery store. =p i can get him a roll of that for around $3 and it lasts him for a while in addition to his dry.

my dogs get wagg worker dry food. it's one of the cheapest and doesn't give them the runs like other stuff. i've tried more expencive stuff but it hasn't been a good move. they get chew treats but not people food. they also get large bones from time to time. all my dogs have lived to be 14ish and have always had great coats and been very healthy. my old boy is 14 and lived out in all weathers (has a kennel in the back of my garage and free to come and go as he pleases) and sadly this is to be his last summer but he has never ailed anything. he's been worth his weight in gold and more and i'm not looking forward to losing him, but age is now not being kind to him.

i had cats and took them to the vet's for a check up. he said to feed specially made cat foods as they are true meat eaters whereas dog are selective meat eaters. dogs will eat anything whereas cats generally won't. i guess there's always the exception to the rule though.

I also allow some of the 'okay' things as occasional treats.

Open a cheese packet anywhere in the house and you have 3 sets of eyes in your immediate vicinity giving you the "ohhhhhhhhhh pooooooooooorrrrrrrrr starrrrrrrrrrrvvvvvvvvveeeeed meeeeeeeeee" look. Generic Dude started that!

Sophie thinks bananas are divine and gets the very ends. Whatever fresh fruits and veggies are in the house and okay for them to eat, they usually get a sampling. Or, whenever we are cutting up meat, they sometimes are allowed a nibble.

The cat......this time of year I have to assume there is a lot of fresh game in his diet since he will not even bother coming in for days. When he does he gets a locally made, dry kibble. He is a picky bugger and won't eat most of what I have ever tried putting in front of him.

The horses get mostly grass this time of year, supplemented with a grain 'sweet feed' made by the local feed mill. And they always have access to a mineral block. When pasture gets skimpy or non-existent, it a good grass hay that is added. The weather determines how much grain and hay. Much more heavily during cold winter months. And sometimes, when it is really cold, I fill a bucket with warm water that I've added molasses to, as a treat to add calories to help them stay warm. Mo acts like he's been given ice cream. Their treats also depend on the season. Mostly fruit, some veg.

You have to be REALLY careful when changing a horse's diet or giving treats, otherwise you might have a very sick horse. They have very delicate systems.

My dog gets Solid Gold brand dry dog food mixed with water to make gravy. It's the only one I could find that didn't have corn or wheat gluten as one of the primary ingredients. Solid Gold is made with a variety of meats such as bison, lamb, and fish plus brown rice.

He likes the Wolf King variety, which is designed for large dogs, even though he's a medium-sized dog. He just would not eat the medium dog variety for some reason. He gets occasional treats of whatever meat we're eating for supper mixed with his food and rolled rawhide chew bones. He's also our fuzzy vacuum and eats whatever falls on the floor (except chocolate).

I did the raw dog food deal for a while, but my scatter brain had a problem remembering to defrost so I switched to The Honest Kitchen which is sort of a freeze dried raw food you rehydrate. The Sojos reminds me a lot of THK except THK main varieties include protein. Dogs loved and I loved the results but one of the dogs started getting fussy on me again. Can't let the honest kitchen stuff sit out for hours on end (well, not with this dog's stomach) so we switched over to dry so I can leave it out all day. We started out with Fromm because they are one of my fav. commercial dog food brands but with my brokeness we've switched to Blue Buffalo which IMO is one the better easily accessible dry foods out there.

I've been pretty shocked that my local petsmart is starting to carry some high quality brands like Innova, which is a lot better then the stuff our local pet stores stock (their best quality food is Merrick.) I'd really love to go back to the honest kitchen since they don't use anything that wouldn't pass for human consumption (I do realize this is arguable, but they did win their lawsuit so for the little it is worth...) to me its the next best thing to going back to making my own or doing a mix like LaTigresse with Sojos.

So many people don't really care what it is in their dog food - but as someone who has a dog with allergies it saves me a heck of a lot of money in other ways and even my non-allergy dog is so much better for it.

Blue Buffalo Senior diet for the cats. The rabbit gets oxbow timothy pellets and lots of hay imported from across the country because it's better quality than the crap I get here. The hamster gets organic apple twigs, and carefully selected hamster food, the name of which escapes me at the moment.

That depends upon the individual dog and cat.

My cat will eat kibble until he is obese. Two of my dogs......would just eat what they need. The smallest one.....she has no shut off switch.

my dog has a pretty good handle on self-regulation. every dog i've ever had had no problems with overeating.

Mine get Friskies wet food, but only certain ones. The dry i rotate a bit, I give them Iams weight and hairball control, Purina indoor and the Good life dry. I have to do that because they will only eat certain ones......picky little eaters! They do well with these three, and the Iams works great on the hairballs.....they don't seem to be heaving them up, and I can tell they are passing them when I scoop the boxes. I'd really like to wean them off the canned food, it's expensive, and seems to keep them a bit heavy. But KB is having issues with his metabolism, and even tho he eats the dry, the wet helps keep his weight on him.

Mine are grazers, they won't eat until they can't move. Boo is really the only BBK I have....big beautiful kitteh......but even then, his fat is solid, he's still active, can jump a good 5 feet to catch his fishing toy, but I'd like to see him lose a bit of weight.
