Just wondering it seems more people go for the pay sites I don't understand it. Yet there is a nice free site with pretty good features for being free.

because some people like different sites?
some people like alt, some people like bondage.com, some people like collarme and some people like fetlife.
people have different tastes.

The amount of pepes asking for money for one service or another makes you think that this is no different to a paysite really. its not that bad as long as you can ignore those.

There has been research into this on the vanilla side in advertising and sales.

When you must pay for something, people assume it must be better. Free stuff isn't valued as highly regardless of the quality.

I like CM. When I think of whether or not I am going to pay for something, I think of the research and I ask myself "what am I buying?"

I think it is called a Giffen good,the more expensive something is the more people believe in its worth hence people think a pay site has more to offer

I've been on Alt. Back in the days before Fet, it was a better option for those of us who played out of town or in surrounding areas, especially at public clubs. I never paid a dime for Alt. I never had to.

I don't frequent the other sites that much - I have, but not to any great extent. Wondering, though...just by the names of the sites themselves, alt or fet could encompass just about any type of sexual activity, whereas Collar Me has a definite D/s link to it. Yes, we are all into many different things on this site, but if I was just perusing sites, and I wasn't into being collared, I might pass up this site for a more neutral-ground seeming type of place.

Alt used to be the only site. It was pretty good. Then the site owners become more focused on how to get more revenue per user than to provide a good user experience. They added useless features, such as the ability to use wingdings in outgoing messages, and cut back on free capabilities - limiting men to three free messages a day, then none. Naturally, competing sites sprang up.

Alt has the history. Collarme and Fetlife own the present.

I don't know where you log into alt from but within 50 miles of Me there are like 3 female subs. PERIOD.

I used to be a paid member years ago and met a few nice folks but in this area it is DEAD.

I don't care much for any of the pay-for sites out there, especially if your inbox gets spammed to hell with messages from supposed women in the area or don't even try to hide the fact that they're using bots to sucker money out of me

I've even had one site send me "local matches" that were not only not in my state, but many not even in the same country
The UK isn't exactly "local", neither is California

I used to love bondage dot com. Until it started placing restrictions on what 'free' members could do, so I started looking for alternatives. This place offered everything that bondage dot com did, so I came here instead.

I had an ALT account for about a week - total nightmare! I got so many "Wanna fuck?" messages it made my head spin! It seemed that ALT was more about finding sex rather than finding a relationship, so I cancelled my account and moved here. I do get the occasional HNG mail, but nothing like the volume I used to get on ALT.

I do have a fetlife account, but I don't like the message board side very much, so I tend to hang out here.

This is what I find in my area too. Very few active members in my area.

I haven't been on Alt in years. But the last time I was on there, I notice that most of the Dommes in my area who had profiles had actually not logged onto the site in 6 months or more. The large numbers of inactive profiles was making the membership seem larger than it actually was.

Alt used to be a good site, but I think other sites took a big bite out of it.

I went to both Alt.com and Bondage.com...and my eyeballs were bleeding from all the nonstop dick and pussy pix. I can easily understand why a lot of guys go to those sites.

Lots of people come here to CollarMe, but most stay in the mail room or chat room areas...or lurk. I thought this BDSM site was the biggest on the planet...it's not? (Gets ready to stuff her fingers in her ears and go LA LA LA.)

Like others have said, paying money makes a lot of people automatically think something must be better. I had an Alt account for a few days. Never paid to become a full member. Just wanted to look around. I didn't like it at all and found this site a few weeks later.

Another thing, sites like this are obviously plagued with fake accounts, spam, etc. I think people who don't know any better think that the fakes are going to be weeded out on a pay site. Maybe they think "who is going to pay to roam a site as a fake/spammer when they can just come to a free site?" I would have thought the same thing maybe 5 years ago. Not anymore. It's my experience that a lot of people have money to spare on some of the dumbest things. Both online and in their lives.

Well, maybe the glass is half-full.

Perhaps alt.com attracts everyone dumb enough to pay for a service that can be had for free, thus improving the pool here.

Alternatively, perhaps being on CM means it will be assumed that I am either tight or wretchedly poor. Thus it will not come as a shock. Either way is a good.

There is also the factor of exposure and awareness, I googled BDSM dating sites, among other variations, and CollarMe wasn't that far up the list.

There's also the possibility that folks have heard horror stories about the type of messages that can come through on CM. I know that's the case with lots of sites, but a lot of people do reference CM in particular when they start complaining.

Sites like alt claim they have a ton of members but you will eventually find that many of those "members" have not been online in months or years, duplicate accounts, fakes, etc so to appear to have a large number whereas the number of active members is considerably less.

But that is my take on why people join, cuz they think they will meet a lot more people when the reverse is true, imo. Also, it attracts guys that want casual sex and will pay fees to email, etc cuz they think its the easiest way to get laid...

I am of the opinion in general that when you pay money, you do weed out the fakes - as long as everyone pays money and the website tries to weed out fakes. My understanding that Alt.com has set up a system that encourages certain kinds of fakes. For that reason, Alt.com has lost it's loyal following.

Fetlife refuses to act as a dating website (they make filtering impossible so you have to weed through people from long distances and wrong fetishes), while collarme.com works pretty well as a dating web site.
