A quirk of mine is that I'm not comfortable in a kinky relationship (even a play partner one) unless the vanilla aspect of mutual respect is there and right first.

Why do you assume this is alien to most of us. I would hazard a guess that any of us in a longer term relationship has it founded on mutual respect and liking.

And I find it terribly sad that schools in Tennessee don't teach Shakespeare.

They teach it here in New East Lower Bumblebum, Manitoba. And we don't even speak English here!

What's he that wishes so?
My cousin Westmoreland? No, my fair cousin;
If we are marked to die, we are enough
To do our country loss; and if to live,
The fewer men, the greater share of honour......

Yadda, yadda, yadda......

And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

I still have most of that one memorized. I was the cutest Henry V that ever was, if not the most convincing. [;)]

Back to the OP:

I think "silly" was meant in its sense of being absurd, rather than its sense of being pointless, stupid or weak-minded. There's the rub with English and its multiple meanings for one word!

Taken that way, then yes, I identify with the OP. As a Domme I have giggled at My pleasure in striking someone in play, because it goes against all My childhood conditioning about not hitting someone ... and here he is begging for it! As a sub even moreso, it's the source of the 'giggle space' i go through on my way into subspace, the absurdity of me being tied, kneeling (in the old days when i could LOL) or in some other position wanting someone i love deeply to inflict pain on me is just hilarious! Not so often in everyday language interactions, i love calling Him Master and that is not absurd at all, any more than His given name is absurd (unless you dyslex it, then He becomes a drain). However, when my face betrays my inner naughty thoughts and He starts interrogating me then the absurdity kicks in and i go all giggly again. But He doesn't take it the wrong way either, in fact He enjoys making me squirm and giggle. And of course, when i call Him (who is 15 years younger) "dadda" and He calls me "bubba" in our lovey-dovey form of age play, well, i can't think of a nicer kind of silly! Silly is not necessarily a bad thing.
