So uh - Ok, I saw this in someones journal entry today and actually see it on all sorts of profiles here:

WARNING:

Any institution or person using this site or any of its associated sites for study or projects - You DO NOT have our permission to use any of our profile or pictures in any form or forum both current or future. If you have or do, it will be considered a serious violation of my privacy and will be subject to legal ramifications.

It is recommended that other members post a similar notice as well.

And so I messaged the person and asked: What is that supposed to do?
I doubt I'll get a response. So maybe someone can answer this for me ... why do people put this on their profile? What is it that the person is going to do if someone "seriously violates" their privacy? Anyone have any answers? I'm dying to know.

Sincerely,
Sasha

i know people were doing it on fetlife because there was a rumor going around that students from the University of Sydney (in Australia) were taking stuff off people's profiles for some kind of project. i dont' know if it was ever true, but lots of FL profiles had that disclaimer (specifically mentioning University of Sydney, or any other institution).
frankly, if they're going to steal stuff from you, there's not a whole lot you can do because how on earth would you even find out about it?

I think it is because some folks think other folks actually care what they write.

I always giggle and think they are just being a pompous ass when I see that on someones profile.

I use that as a screening mechanism.  If someone believes that, I think less of them.

1. The people who steal pics usually use them to scam others, in violation of the law.  If they're going to defraud others of money, stealing pics is not a big thing.
2. As Lilly mentions, the possibility of finding out that someone else is using your pics is not great.
3. Pics of porn stars are available on the net.  Why would someone steal my pics when there are much better looking men whose pics could be stolen?

I don't understand how they are going to prosecute: LordMasterOfTheUniverse that lives in Egypt. Or even one that lives one state away for that matter. Are they going to hire a lawyer to prosecute, or a private investigator to find out the info of the CM scam artist so they can then bring the "serious violator" to justice? Or maybe they can bring the "serious violator"on Judge Judy. I'm sure she'd put that "violator" in their place! I don't get it.

Rumors. i heard the University of Sydney was using the the profiles in some kind of study, and then selling the info off to sex slave traffickers. i don't know if it's true, but i can say that for a while i had some really sketchy people (who i'd never heard of before) suddenly "searching" for my profile.

i suspect that there are people who do use the site for that purpose. i don't think anything can be done about it.

There was a thread recently about privacy and the expectation of privacy in the modern world. Basically, anything you post on the internet is fair game. It's unrealistic to expect that the info on a collarme profile will be kept "confidential". Those disclaimers are just plain silly.

Ooooooh, sex slave traffickers. Sadly I'm fairly certain they have no use for this fat old lady, so I guess I don't need a disclaimer on my profile. If I see that on someone's profile, I tend to lose interest in them, because it tells me that they are a sheeple, not a person I'd be interested in at all.

ETA: I was going to post a link to the Internet Lawsuit Form on Encyclopedia Dramatica, but it seems to have changed into something else. *sigh*

And even if you found out about it, there's the small issue of pursuing legal actions across borders. If you think the US or UK have a complex legal system, try suing someone in, say, Australia, who's using a server based in, say, Thailand.

Your head will explode. Just after you go broke :)

Me too! I feel that anyone that puts that on their profile is one of the sheep and not able to think on their own or question what is questionable. Sooo... I chuckle when I see that and move on.

Then you don't know about your saw-horse picture being on every DIY site in the northern hemisphere?

It doesn't do anything.

It gives warning....nothing else.

You could have as easily said "Stop....or I'll shoot!".....and then said...."STOP, or I'll shoot again" (Robin Williams), with no armor.

It's only a warning...one that carries (zero) legal weight.

None....nada....zip....zero.
