Lot of military uses there with the camera capability.

If it could be programmed to drop its payload (easy switch) you could take pictures of bad guys and then drop a grenade on their heads.

Except it won't have the flight endurance, range or payload to be able to do that.

But a fun toy.

Well, maybe not a grenade- but in case you haven't noticed- these things can fly autonomously- give 'em a set of GPS coordinates and they'll get there. I suspect that a range of 10 klicks with a payload and return is not out of the realm of possibility- larger ones may be able to cover more ground.

However, if you want to play with one- check out the Alien Air Quadcopter which I think sells for less than a c-note and includes the IR transmitter good for flying indoors. Micro helicopters have gotten pretty cheap and now often come with gyros which makes them much easier to fly. The quadcopters are easier to fly. Of course if you want to check out what your neighbor is doing, the lipstick cameras make that pretty easy to do as well- so much for privacy!

Yeah ... except anything with a tactical range of less than 1,000 Km is useless, militarily.

Oh, and your neighbour would hear it from a mile off.

Other than that, yeah, great.

Fun toy though.

Umm- not quite. Dropping something on the guy over the next hill is always useful. But the use of unmanned weapons in wartime is another debate.

"Oh, and your neighbour would hear it from a mile off."

One of the issues that people in the hobby are wrestling with is that typically, the average individual hasn't had to view a toy like this as a possible spy platform. Would you stop what you are doing because your neighbor was flying one in his yard? (most of the people flying these things are guys- there are some exceptions though.) A woman sunbathing nude might want to cover herself if she sees a full scale helicopter nearby- but now the potential is that these things can be effective at taking pictures too- and they can probably get a lot closer than a full scale helicopter although the cameras don't have the resolution of larger versions.

Cheers,

Sam

The kind of camera required to get decent pics of a human-sized object from a reasonable height would be considerable heavier, plus you can hear those things a mile off as they're in the higher register.

Plus it doesn't have the range or hover endurance.

Other than that, great post.

In terms of camera resolution- you can get a keychain size camera that does a megapixel- and they're cheap and easy to fit into a small aircraft like this one. Warning- the clip is a bit loud, but it gives you an idea of the resolution available. This was shot from a fast little jet. The small quadcopters easily have a 5 minute flying time- how much do you need to sneak a pic of a somebody sunbathing?

Why I bother trying to knock understanding into idiots is beyond me.

I give up. Believe whatever you want to. Yes it'll be a great surveillance tool, you're absolutely right
