TreasureKY -> Airports... the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (7/2/2011 8:39:59 AM)

Firm and I travel by air fairly often, though it is usually into the same airports.  You can't help but develop opinions on which are "good" and which are not.  It really isn't a reflection on the final destination, but I'm always surprised when the city we are visiting is just fantastic, but the airport sucks big weenies.

As an example, we just got back from Montreal this week.  Beautiful city and always a joy to visit... but the Trudeau Airport is an absolute nightmare!  Sometimes it is hard to put your finger on, but in this case, it is easy to say why our impression isn't a good one.  The layout of the airport is just awful.

I'm rather rubbish in guessing distances, but I can tell you it is one hellava walk from the arrival gates to customs.  It felt like at least a mile of blank corridors, stairs and winding turns.  You just keep walking and walking and walking... following signs (sometimes almost hidden) that merely say "arrivals".  After a while, you almost wonder if you're heading to the right place.

There does seem to be a general lack of clear direction and flow.  Even though we'd been through the airport before, it was a bit confusing finding our way out of the airport and to the taxis.   (Don't get me started on the taxi rides in Montreal.  [;)])

Coming back through to depart, the distance wasn't nearly as bad but it did get to be a bit of a joke between Firm and I about how many times we had to show our passport and have our boarding passes scanned.  It seemed like it was every 50 feet or so... I think our final count was showing our passports seven times, and having our boarding passes scanned eight times.

Hartsfield Airport in Atlanta is no joyous place, either, but I will say it has gotten better recently.  That, or perhaps I've just gotten used to it.  It does have lots of amenities both before and after security, and at least has trains to convey you to the different concourses.  If I were a first time traveler departing from or arriving there, however, I'd be very unhappy with the signage and directions.

Kansas City Airport is decent, considering.  There isn't much in the way of diversion there when waiting for a flight... few places to eat and shop, and it is aging, but getting in and out of the terminal is a breeze.  With the horseshoe design, you're never more than 50 feet or so from gate to front door.

Denver International is another one that is horrid.  Huge and confusing is about all I can say for it.  [&:]

McCarran in Vegas isn't too bad.  At least on the inside.  It's a little more confusing actually trying to leave the airport.  But it is clean and tidy, and they do have some nice places to eat and shop while waiting.

My favorite is the Norfolk International Airport in Virginia.  While few amenities are available, the new facilities and the beautiful setting made this a pleasant airport to travel through.  Pity it isn't one of our "regular" destinations.

So... what are your "best" and "worst"?

Harrisburg and Baltimore are decent.

I haven't flown in years, but I have to say, there is one escalator at Hartsfield that freaked me out the last time I took someone there to catch a flight.

Agreed.  And when the damn train system goes down, the entire airport screeches to a halt.

On the other hand, the Colorado Springs airport is wonderful.  Everything is quick and easy, and relaxed.

Newark 25 years ago was one of the worst ever. the remodel improved it a lot.

I used to remind Me of a rural Greyhound bus station.

Logan is the first place I ever had Sam Adams ale so it will hold a good place.

Miami sux.

The Man just flew out of Stewart. It's very nearby and the parking lot doesn't require a bus. I think I prked 20 feet away from the front door. However it only has one tiny coffee shop before you go into security. You can buy a paper at the coffee shop but no news kiosk. They may have one near the gates, but I can't remember.

Dallas is one airport that I refuse to fly thru. Minneapolis has a great layout which is good for quick gate changes but horrible restaurant selections for long layovers.

Agreed. Hideous. And apparently 1,000 miles wide, when you're trying to get from A to B for a connection.

The most amusing is Carcassonne, in the south of France. It's like someone saw an airport, and said "I want one of those ... only much, much smaller" ... even the baggage carousels are half width, tiny affairs. Sort of a Fisher Price "My First Airport".

Cracks me up every time I go there.

Oh and Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (Varadero) in Cuba is just the most whimsical place ... the guards look really menacing, but the moment you talk to them they become the most friendly guys imaginable. Everyone is perpetually confused and it's total chaos, but it's a good, happy kind of chaos.

I used to live in Dallas but didn't fly often.  Firm and I flew there in May... I don't remember the terminal being too bad, but getting back to the airport with our rental car was horrible.  Who the heck puts an airport smack in the middle of a toll road?  [8|]

sydney airport is great - has showers, has krispy kremes.

adelaide airport is ok. not too big, but no krispy kremes

tasmania is itty bitty tiny. you have to actually walk on the tarmac to get inside!!!

rome is a blur, and i don't remember it overly fondly, but i was pregnant and a fricken long flight and a long time ago.

everything into and out of the states takes a lot longer these days, and sometimes after a long flight, it doesn't' matter how good the airport is, it's all ugly and bad until you're in a soft bed somewhere else.

Paris Charles de Gaulle airport feels enormous but lovely. There are loads of pointless open spaces. When waiting for my flight a couple of years ago, I ended up watching someone else presumably doing the same thing crack out their yoga mat and do a whole routine. Maybe that's why I've got fond memories of it!

Take zee train between concourses, unless you have gates really close together (end of one to beginning of other).

Treasure, it's only a toll road from the north.  The south entrance is a freebie, and has a very convenient gas station just before the rental return.

I'm cursed with frequent travel through DFW.  I really hate Hartsfield because it's too loud and it's hard to find vaguely nutritious food within the terminals.  They also have frequent gate changes...especially when you're in the bathroom! [:D]

ORD can be a balls to the wall fubar due to delays, but if I miss my connection at least there are a lot more flights later in the day.  I have another 6 chances to get out to the west coast on United if I leave DAY fairly early in the morning.  Not so with AA out of DFW.

Phoenixpower -> RE: Airports... the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (7/4/2011 4:21:00 PM)

The one in Oklahoma I liked...I think it was that one I flew to last year...it felt cleaner to me than others...

The one in Chicago I didn't like much...

On another note Europe could learn from canada and america in regards to the stations they offer to recharge your phone or laptop....haven't seen that one in Europe so far and when i dared to charge it up a bit I got told off for doing so in the UK [8|] so in tha respect the airports from USA and Canada appear to me to be more customer friendly...

hardcybermaster -> RE: Airports... the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (7/4/2011 4:26:03 PM)

I remember going on cheap ski holidays before the security shit got too bad, we used to fly into Grenoble and Perpignon,it was basically an aircraft hanger and 1 policeman...happy days.
Heathrow is horrible,we're not used to guns here and it is always a bit freaky to see cops with shooters

PhilSlave -> RE: Airports... the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (7/4/2011 4:48:33 PM)

Bangkok is a good airport, KL is not bad, Gatwick and Heathrow are shit, Stanstead is O.K. Siem Raep is terrible and bribery is part of visiting.

hardcybermaster -> RE: Airports... the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (7/4/2011 5:22:47 PM)

My other half flew back from Dalaman in Turkey a while ago...........drum roll......£21 for a bigmac! fuck me!
