Republicans portray themselves as champions of fiscal responsibility. But as Michael Tomasky argues, they need the debt to push through their radical and unpopular agenda.

Now Minnesota joins the list of states being gutted by the Republican Party. The government in the state famous for being nice has shut down, because Democratic Governor Mark Dayton wanted to impose a higher income tax on Minnesotans earning $1 million or more a year—a whopping 7,700 people in a state of 5.3 million. There are additional matters—a GOP insistence on a 15 percent reduction in state workers over the next four years, for example. And so the evidence mounts: In Saint Paul and Columbus and Tallahassee and Madison, as in Washington D.C., we are watching something that is no longer a political party in the normal sense, but a group of cynical highwaymen perpetuating a national crisis and then exploiting that very crisis to try to destroy the public sphere.

It's actually true, especially in recent years. This shows a nifty little chart of debt as percentage of GDP since 1945:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_debt_by_U.S._presidential_terms

Under all but one Democrat (Obama), percentage went down. It went up in all but 2 of the Republicans listed - Eisenhower and Nixon's first term.

Seriously it's like a roller coaster. Red goes up, blue goes down, red goes up, blue goes down.

ETA - I actually think it's interesting that people are riding on Obama for national debt. His percentage change (9%) is less than both of Reagan's terms (11.3 and 9.3%), Bush I (13%) and Bush II's second term (20.7%, more than twice Obama's) - compared to recent GOP Presidents, Obama's change in the debt is below average.

Rep. Charlie Dent (R-PA) challenged on taxes, oil subsidies

http://youtu.be/ShrYB2XX_8Y

quote:

CONSTITUENT: You guys are protecting your sacred cows. Your oil company subsidies, everybody understands that. Just take ‘em, they don’t need them. The tax cuts for the extremely wealthy, they’re doing great, they don’t need them. You can’t come to us and say, ‘We’re going to take your Medicare away because we don’t think it’s working for you.’ [...] That’s why your boys [Republican leadership] are walking out of the room. They say take these off the table. Tell Mr. Cantor to put them back on the table.

The GOP does not like debt.  But it's a junkie, unable to kick it.

The GOP is addicted to tax cuts.  By professing that the Laffer curve works, they rationalize that tax cuts create so much private sector economic activity that the government actually takes in more than it lost in cuts.  It's been shown that the resulting deficit is crippling by Bush II.  The GOP's been cutting taxes while keeping spending high and professing fiscal responsibility.

The Dems used to buy into the fact that tax hikes were necessary to pay for increased spending.  But Obama's been keeping deficits high too.

Republicans love debt, public or private, always have: debt abuse has a been a feature of every republican economy going back to the Civil War.

Two thing you can always count on in a republican administration: debt abuse and some sort of large scale real estate fraud, it's practically axiomatic.

Who was who coined the term "tax and spend Democrats"? I remember Reagan used to say that a lot but I think it predates him. Time to ensure Americans that the GOP is a "borrow and spend" party. Which would you rather have in charge?

Neither.  Time to review the expenditures and start cutting back. Unfortunately, the entire system is set up to spend money.

Ron Paul is the only presidential candidate against warfare AND corporate welfare. He's feared and hated by war hawks and bailed-out corporations. His 30-year congressional voting record--Dr. No!--strongly suggests that he would lower taxes AND spending.

It all goes back to Grover Norquist, "Starve the Beast" and supply side economics. The GOP wants to burden the US with debt while reducing taxes so they have an argument for abolishing programs they dislike, anything that does not benefit white wealthy older men.

His stance is so strong that if he ever hit the Oval Office he would soon be called a liar.

Yes, you do have to starve the beast of government. ALl it does is grow. Take the money away and let the programs die. These programs merely make people more dependent on others... which is what demo-tards want. "vote for da donkey" mantra.

Got news for ya. I dont believe there is one "social" program that doesnt have a hand in the corporate world. And the reason that hand is there is to get people re-elected... on both sides of the isle... hurt the social programs and you will hurt the government in ways you have yet to imagine.

He'll be called a lot of things before then! lol

I don't think he would compromise on the big issues. Have you seen the list of bills that everyone in Congress voted for except him? It's a long list. Of course that means more gridlock, which is fine with me at this point.

Its easy to vote no when everyone else is voting yes. Much harder when you are the focus and the last vote that counts is yours.

I recognized the scam as soon as Reagan 1st put us in debt and declared we therefore couldn`t fund social programs.

What a fuck`n cheeky way to get around the will of the American people. No need to make changes to programs democratically, when you can just de-fund them.

The GOP and a majority of voters do not like debt in Wisconsin. We now have a balanced budget for the first time in 2 decades. The world did not come to an end and the sky didn't fall when Scott Walked signed the budget bill 2 weeks ago.

Why dont you look at it based on where the majority in Congress lies...you know..the ones that actually set the budget? Oh, because it doesnt suit your agenda.
