MsMacComb.

I've only skimmed through the bulk of the posts, but I have to say that your opening poost was one of the most entertaining posts I've read for quite a while.. You approached it in much the same way as I like to myself which may or may not be a good thing.

To respond to Gauge's question on the first post, I see someone who is both informed, humorous, and lucidly communicative demanding some form of homesty in those who participate in the Adult Industry and suggesting that they drop their double standards. I too am damned tired of the typical bible belt, bible thumpers who desry my choices of lifestyle, religion and living o the one hand being involved in one form or another in the Adult Industries....

Mod XI it doesn't matter what the reasons, I applaude the owner/s of CM for creating and maintaining this site to allow us all to meet and talk, bitch winge and whine.....

If only that were true.  We don't even come close to paying for the bandwidth used each month, much less make a profit.

Any decent hosting company will offer a dedicated host (throttled) for $200 and up. That means a set rate per month. If someone can't cover that with ads, impressions, pay per clicks etc then they are doing something wrong. Raise prices on ads or have a reciprocal links section to increase traffic which ups the chances of clicks on ads. Although I still doubt that this site doesnt make a profit.[:)]

A dedicated host?  Heh, that's a good one.

If these sites (collarme and collarchat) could run on a single 1u server in a bargain basement colo facility, I suppose that it could be an option at the price point you mention above.  Unfortunately, they can't.  Dedicated hosts might be a good alternative for vanity sites or small commercial ventures that utilize negligible bandwidth but they're hardly a feasible solution for sites with multiple production, database and development servers, multiple RAID arrays and the associated networking hardware to support such an infrastructure.

Thanks for the tip though.  I'll be sure and pass it on to our benevolent overlords because they're always looking for ways to save money [;)]

Nothing. Someone used it as an illustration and it was a good one. Sorry you didn't understand something so clear.

This site is one of the same ones that John Ashcroft/Alberto Gonzales and the fundies would call "obscene" and close down in a moment if they can. The fact that you act like you don't support "porn" shows you to be a fraud. Or are you now going to tell us you own no porn tapes/DVDs, never visit sites that hanve nudity and buy no mags with nudes?

A fraud? How so? I have not made a claim that I do not look at or own pornography. I have visited sites with nudity and various other things but it has been quite some time since I have done so (several years in fact) one reason is those sites, for the most part, are replete with spyware and other nasty things I do not care to have on my computer.

quote:

Again. What the hell are you talking about? China, dollar stores? Or are you saying that the anti-pornocrites should have no qualms about making millions form porn, while denouncing it every Sunday after buying it on Saturday night?

Another illustration that I used. Sorry that you didn't see how it was relevent. I shall try to refrain from using such complex concepts in the future.

I don't own a porn site. I own a couple sites that are informational, educational, artistic and are adult entertainment.

Put lipstick on a pig and it is still a pig. Ooops... sorry, that was an illustration. Let me try something else. You may call it what you will but I do not see the distinction between your site and any other porn site. Was that clear enough?

I never put words in your mouth. I drew a conclusion based on your statements. And I am very capable of grasping logic. When you start offering some, let me know will you?

Inflammatory? Oh Good GOD call the police. This whole site is nothing but inflammatory articles and opinions. As are most newspapers, TV shows, News Programs, blogs etc. So is virtually everything in politics. Let me ask you a question. Where is it that people like you and DM come from? You seem to have such an odd and naive vision of the world and reality. Its like you may have read a "how to" book on everything from sex, politics, driving and are under the assumption that means you know what its about. You mostly seem to (as DM does and at least one Femdom, lol) do nothing but argue everything that others say and seem to view that as the highlight of your lives. Why? You may be better served joining a debate team that discusses things in theory rather than here in the real world where its reality.

Nice try. Some here actually think that I have a fairly firm grip on reality. I asked a simple question about why you posted this topic... my mind (as mired in unreality as it is) just cannot come up with a reason except for the fact that you want to take shots at others.

I enjoy a debate. I enjoy intellectual discourse. I also know when I see someone desperately trying to undermine my positions by calling me things like "fraud" and "idiotic."

You are free to do as you wish, my point in calling you on this is to point out that you are not merely a disinterested party making an observation, you are directly involved in the industry no matter how you dress it up and starting this thread was a way to take some shots at people that you deem hypocrites.

IB, I do not disagree with that. I do not disagree that some have a double standard. But the inference in the OP was that everyone was complicit in their endorsement of the porn industry whether they knew it or not. I just do not agree with that. I also find it ironic that someone in the "adult entertainment" (read porn) industry would be posting something like this with an obvious bias and a self serving agenda.

So sorry. Some of the larger sites on the web use a dedicated but I guess Collar is so special its not possible. Its just a little text/chat forum. Its not like it has media that is being downloaded that requires a lot of bandwidth. Seriously, if someone isnt seeing or seeking options then they are being severly misinformed.[:D]

MsMacComb -> RE: Adult Entertainment and Myth. (5/18/2006 12:18:38 AM)

Oh good God here we go again.  Gauge, you may get off on debating every point that anyone mentions until our Sun burns out but I don't care to. You see your opinion means nothing to me. The irony here (again) is that you (and a couple others) insult people, make your little jabs and sarcastic replies but then if I reply in kind I get my posts deleted and a nasty message from a biased moderator. Nice little system that you have working in your favor, but then you already know that so you fully take advantage of it as it probably makes you feel manly or important or something.
But with running the risk of having this post deleted as well, I will mention this. Hopefully your over inflated ego which vastly surpasses all other body parts and your intellect will be able to grasp it, but I doubt it.
To me (and that little document known as the Constitution) what we are talking about is free speech. Sure going back through the decades a couple moronic and repressed justices came up with some asinine conclusions that a certain form of erotica was acceptable and other types was "obscene". Which is pure and simple bullshit, which you should be very familiar with.
See to those of us that have a clue, anything done between consenting adults, and the depiction of it in certain quarters, is not a problem, is legal and protected. Obscenity (and the term "porn" which to many has become interchangeable, but I believe stems from a term used to describe prostitutes which I know nothing about) is what occurs without consent. Such as rape, necrophilia, beastiality and pedophilia. Those acts are obscene as they lack consent, are illegal as well they should be.
If you want to get into the semantics over what describes "porn" then by all means have at it. To some the depiction of cherubs and  Michelangelo's David could be considered porn, to others it is art. One mans trash is another mans gold. Again, the only thing that should matter is the operative word, consent. So to that end if you want to call my sites "porn" or obscenity by all means have at it. Again, I can think of few people whose opinions mean less to me than yours.
You keep mentioning that I am taking shots at people. Let me clarify for you. FUCK YES I am! Thats the whole goddamn point! Our freedoms and rights are under attack by a small group of hypocrites that hijacked the republican party who are known as neocons and/or Moral Majority. The fact that virtually none of these people have any morals is irrelevant to them, and apparently you. We have an administration that is obsessed with sex.  The control of it. Abortion, porn, dildos (for women only), genital piercings (for women only), morning after pill, abstinence, censorship of what adults can read, write, view, purchase and in many cases who they can and can not sleep with, the gay marriage issue, gay adoption etc, etc, etc. I happen to take this attack seriously. I spend half my day fighting other elements in other ways, in person and online via other forums and other mediums. I will not apologise for fighting for the rights that so many others are to fucking lame to do on their own behalf. And here and similiar forums I write certain things that I consider to be of interest or importance. Now the last time I checked nobody has a fucking gun to your head forcing you to read and reply to my messages. You do so of your own volition. If you don't like my messages DONT READ THEM! Pretty simple right? One would assume even for someone like you. You seem to have appointed yourself (as have a few others) as those that are needed to "call others" on details or to engage in arguments with anything and everything. I would point out that no one has asked you to do this, and perhaps you should consider getting a life. I made a similiar reply to one DM a week or so ago but as that message was deleted the point was never made (as I suspect this one shall be as well). As to the rest of your "points", they arent worth replying to. Get a mirror and argue with yourself. Yes I am sure you will feel the need to come back and state that as someone doesnt wish to waste their life arguing with you that indicates that you somehow "won". Whatever, whatever you need to stroke your ego is fine with me. I write, I do, I take action. Beside lipping off what do you do?
Now before a particular mod deletes this I would hope that he or she views what I am replying to and notices that my sarcasm does not surpass that of the person I am replying to.

I used to run Diversified Services, an online company, and Libby my wife is the VP of information services for a large manufacturing operation so we have a little background in this area.  While there are commercial hosting companies with fees down to $200, the reality is a bit different from the unsolicited proposal letters.  Either they have an unrealisticly low bandwidth alotment and then add kill the customer with assessment after assessment for "overuse" or there are a bunch of hidden fees that pop up only after one starts negotiating with them.  In reality, the costs for an operation like CollarMe have to be magnitudes greater that this sort of bargain basement cost.

Frankly, I wouldn't object to a monthly fee, but I could see where we could lose some interesting members.  It would be nice if Bill Gates were secretly kinky and could fun CollarMe out of petty cash, but the reality is that the service is now free to us and a money drain to the people who are running it.  This leaves them with three options:  Keep running it as a hobby and take the financial hit.  Shut it down and use the saved money to build a really great dungeon somewhere and take on advertising.

As to them getting rich, again, I know the world of advertising for BDSM products.  There ain't a lot of money out there.  I know it sounds funny, but just about everyone I know considers herself or himself lucky in just about making a go.  Check out the vendor parking at an event.  You're more likely to see a Yugo than a BMW.

I'm retired, so I don't have an axe to grind here.  I don't run BDS, I don't run Inner Explorations and I don't run Diversified Services any more.  So it's not a "poor me; buy from me" pitch.

Oh, the retirement, good investment and saving 10-20% of each paycheck... not from getting rich off the BDSM businesses.

Yes. I am so satiated with fulfillment that I am apt to explode from the sheer pleasure of "winning" it is, after all, all I live for.

I find it interesting that you think I am lipping off. In fact, I find it funny.

I won't bother with you again because I think I have made my point. I haven't won anything. You do not answer questions and I find that quite telling.

Adieu.

Sex sells. Everything from porn vids to houses that a guy buys to keep getting laid. ( Aside from all the other reasons )
Obviously human beings are sexual creatures. It is a huge drive within us. Masked in various complex ways by the complex beings we have evolved to. But sex is still a big part of our lives.
Some fear it, lie about it's force in their lives. But the ones who sell everything to us, have hooked themselves up with the psychologists because they know where the money is.
In our genetically gentally wired sub brains.
Enjoy your sexuality. Know it. And then take it away from those who manipulate it.
Buy what you really want and need. Look at what you really want to see. Be it sex toys and porn or/and a minivan.

NastyDaddy -> RE: Adult Entertainment and Myth. (5/18/2006 6:41:19 PM)

There are various forms of foreplay, some are called commercials while some are called advertisements. What is titillating always grabs the subconscious and speaks in a language only the viewer knows, whether he or she... and thus makes sex the ideal genre to deliver your message. Also some cliche about sex being a universal language.

Associations are very fascinating, for example most men view cleavage and their subconcious mind thinks of a pear shaped ass and sex... until the aereola or nipple slip out and make their grand appearance, then the subconscious mind switches to infancy and the need to feed...

Bottom line: What's good for business is good for business and money talks while bullshit walks.
