No ones being hard on you either,Firm.Just reading events and commenting.Don`t get defensive.[8|]

You haven`t addressed the high priest(es) Grover Norquist and this "pledge",that everyone admits (cept the cult members) is unrealistic.

It`s like the dead body in the back corner nobody wants to acknowledge. You can`t ignor it either, unless you prefer ignorance.

Till you distinguish yourself from the rest,we aren`t going to be able to either.Ya`ll look the same.[:D]

The standard lines like "you are too" or this is just another bash thread", aren`t enough.

A few things, first I want to apologize if I cover anything that has already been covered...I'm just jumping in and watching the Yankees precludes going back and reading the three pages( I know,I know...lazy as shit ...sorry).
Let's get this right out of the way...locked you have slid completely into batshit crazy mode, but it is nice to know that yo are being totally honest about things....money equates to "Liberty"in your neo con mind....now we can all just permanently dismiss you
On to an actual serious discussion...with actual serious posters....
Firm let's move from the discussion of cult hood and take it into the area of electability....how does it enhance a Repulican candidates chances of winning in the general to have signed these pledges ...which,for the most part, appeal to the hard right.....and tend to repel those in the center...and certainly any center left?

It is amazing how such a dim wit can still be allowed to walk the street free.  Your liberty interests in this country are directly tied to whether you are able to keep the fruits of your labor.  There are no private property rights if you don't keep enough of your money to ever amass private property.  Not only will you not amass private property, you will not privately educate your children, nor will you privately care for your elderly, nor will you travel or enjoy any of the other emoluments of a free society.

Leftists, like those on this board, are happy to see other Americans taxed to death because they don't have anything anyway.  Misery loves company.

If I were king and I took 90% of all of your income, how would you allocate your remaining 10%?

I can't speak for Firm, but I'll say this much...

1)  Who the hell cares about Grover Norquist?  Has it occurred to you that no one has commented because he's a non-entity?

2)  So frickin what?  Politicians are signing a pledge.  [8|]  How many politicians actually keep their word, anyway?  Better yet, how many voters actually believe that politicians will keep their word?

3)  You do realize this pledge has been around for 25 years, don't you?  Have you been screeching about it this whole time?

4)  While I couldn't give two hoots for this "pledge", you do understand that the politicians (and wannabe politicians) are pledging to the voters... not to Norquist personally, right?

5)  Why would anyone want to pay much attention to it when it has little to no value in the first place?  Sheesh... that's like pitching a fit about there still being laws on the books in Florida making it illegal for a man and woman to live together without being married.  It's there, but it is ignored.

Honestly, the whole "pledge" thing means about as much as the "contracts" that kids sign vowing to stay drug free or to abstain from sex.

Pfft.  [:-]

Too funny...Locked called me a "dim wit".... amazingly he even managed to spell it correctly [:D].Allow this dim wit to comment on your equation of money to liberty....you react to my original comment by claiming they are "directly" tied. Now while I will grant you that having money allows one to enjoy ones liberty to a duller extant....I will not now nor ever subscribe to any theory that basically ties my liberty to my possession of material things.
Can I not be as free,in my liberty as a poor man? Is that not the ideal of this nation...that my inalienable rights are as fully guaranteed despite an empty bank account as the man who has millions. Were I to accept your measure of liberty than I would need to admit that a man who has more than me...enjoys greater liberty than me...that I am not now ,nor will I ever in the future ,concede.

DomKen -> RE: Interesting Take on the GOP: It's a Cult (7/7/2011 3:11:11 PM)

FR

Keep in mind that the top GOP candidates are not simply signing Grover norquist's pledge on taxes they are also, mostly, signing the SBA List's anti choice pledge requiring them to select anti choice cabinent members and appointees including judges.

It's not that the GOP is requiring candidates to pass litmus tests but that the candidates are not being allowed any nuance to their position.

Some points.

Is an indentured servant "free"?

Could slaves earn wages ... and keep the fruits of their labor?

When you work, and the majority (or even a large percentage) of your earnings go to someone else, how "free" are you?

Debt is slavery, in most cases, for most people.

So I think the thesis that "money" = "freedom" has some validity.

some validity? There is no freedom without economic freedom, period.

Yeah, I know that, will, but sometimes you have to introduce a new concept to people slowly.

Just like a good cult member would.....I sure she`s absolutely clueless about the high priest.More than clueless.

For the other member....

"Leftists, like those on this board, are happy to see other Americans taxed to death because they don't have anything anyway. Misery loves company."

We don`t want taxes any more than you do.\

We just don`t want a select few, getting special treatment/special rights, that the rest of us don`t get.

If however we get rid of the ruinous bush tax breaks, you may by all means send your own money to help the Lear Jet owners out.

It could be your own little version of the bush tax cuts.

Only just don`t ask the rest of America to pay in full while hedge fund managers pay less.

The bush tax cuts cost us over $2.8 trillion in ten years and by the end of his terms he was losing us over 100,000 jobs a month.

That`s a record of failure.

And the nutty-cons and cult members want to continue these ruinous tax breaks?

"Ten years of tax cuts and hollow promises"

Economic growth and new jobs haven't materialized"

Amazing that he doesn't mention that book in his CV.  Not a single publication is anything remotely like that screed above; the quotes in amazon.com read just like Ann Coulter.

What makes Republicans fear Norquist is that he's got one hell of a database, and isn't afraid to use it.  Violate his pledge and he'll do anything in his (sizable) power to run you out of office.  And he's had a lot of success in doing just that.

Boring, inflammatory article designed solely to inflame tensions. Would be cute in The Onion. Disgraceful in a real newspaper.

First of all, how can something be both boring and inflammatory?

Secondly... I can't comment on the authors intentions, but IMHO, it is a spot-on observation. The Republican party became a cult around the time of Clinton. The corporatism in the Republican party that was mostly hidden (except for the obvious areas like defense and oil) became dominant and all-controlling. Now corporations, and wealthy donors completely control the party and the politicians are blind followers. I have not seen a single Republican politician who even vaguely understands how our economy works, the various geopolitical regions, how the oil markets work, or any other major issue for that matter.

They are simply parroting back the cult leaders' message.

This has NOTHING to do with being liberal or conservative. The Republican party completely abandoned the last of its conservative principles in the 90's.

Who cares about Grover Norquist??? Until very recently, every Republican in both houses of Congress.

Not many politicians keep their word, but if signers didn't keep this one, they would be facing a massive, well-funded opposition.

In this case, the whole "pledge" thing means EVERYTHING. It SETS Republican policy in the US.
