Maybe it does GT, that this was more important than funding or improving the schools, which we know are inadequate.

T^T

when Termy figures out how to get the people who write up history curriculums and text books to include the achievements and history of everyone together, then he can whine about how lame a "history month" or "history unit" is.
personally, i don't believe in "history months," but i see them as necessary, because without them you get "white men came to america and ruled it. the end."

Yeah, when I was in high school (8-12 years ago), I think we spent about one month of "world" history studying Asian, African and Latin American history combined and all the rest of the year studying European history. And US history class of course was 90%+ about white men. And IIRC, they weren't supposed to talk about homosexuality in the classroom at all, so gay history was totally off the table.

It's be great if they would actually cover the history of everybody in history class without needing Black History Month etc. Then this wouldn't even be an issue. But they don't, at least not around here.

The guy who discovered plasma, Charles Drew was a black man. I didn't learn about him in school, but then again, I hate science as a whole, so maybe I just wasn't paying attention. Point is, what was his achievement? Was it being black, or making the discovery? In my world, it was what he did, not his ethnicity.

I didn't either - until I did a report about him one year (I forget if it was for black history month or for a report about a scientific discovery, I know we had to do both at different times). Which was really interesting! I personally think it's valuable for kids to learn about about minorities and women that did groundbreaking things, even if it's not a major historical event. It gives them role models and teaches them that all people are capable regardless of race, gender, religion etc.

Many are saying that we "need" those separate months for all these "special" groups. Why not just mandate that these people need to be included in history class, and then fit them in during the appropriate discussions, i.e. the Battle of Antetum during the Civil War part, Dr. King during the Civil Rights portion, Harvey Milk during the politics section?

I think that'd be the best approach, too, and hopefully what we're moving towards, but it seems like often times it's Black History Month or nothing.

We had a year of world history in my high school.  None of my history classes mention anyone sexual preferences.

High school history tends to be an overview.  Covering major elections wars and major social changes.
We covered Blacks during the Civil war part , the Chinese during the railroad building.
The Civil rights movement was covered in current affairs class( it was the 60's) .

I was 18 before I found out that Joe Louis  was black  before that I just knew he was a great boxer.   Which was more important?
