My question is this:
What recycled goods do you turn into toys for you lil monsters?

I have 3 cats. 2 bengals and a fluff ball. The fluffball in content to sleep on our giant ballsack, but the other two must be constantly entertained or else the meowing will not stop.
I've tried little fake mice... no dice.
Laser pointers... worked for a while til Miko started attacking my hand instead of the lil red dot, soon, he taught wet paw this much more entertaining trick. ><
And don't get me started on those 18 dollar string and feather toys. They work great for all of a day before they are torn apart.

And then one day I came home with a milkshake and a foot and a half long bendy straw. Miko stole it! and played with it, when he was bored i started moving it, to great success. The same free straw has now lasted over 2 weeks.

ON second thought I realise polls is the right place for this... silly me.
If someone could move it I would be grateful.

Cashew LOVES the plastic grocery bags tied into knots, so that he can chase/capture and carry them like mice..

the pull tabs off of milk bottles and such

single socks (yanno, the one that it's mate has been disappeared by the drier?)  tied into a mousy looking knot..

Amos TRIES to play, Cashie wont let her.. *sigh*

LadyPact -> RE: Stop mrowing, heres a straw (7/6/2011 10:02:04 AM)

Dumbest things on the planet.  The cap to the bottle of diet pepsi.  Dang thing is round and if they get it just right, it rolls away from them to chase.  Only problem is, they tend to run off behind chairs and under other furniture.

GT, one of Mine has a great love of the pull off tab from milk tops.  We had to put a stop to it.  Nermal kept taking the things into the bathtub because she loved the noise they would make in there.  Four pound cat sounded like a two ton elephant with the echo.

tolovetolaugh -> RE: Stop mrowing, heres a straw (7/6/2011 10:08:18 AM)

I love the name Nermal :)
Never tried milk caps- we have a child lock on the fridge since they kept opening it.

GreedyTop -> RE: Stop mrowing, heres a straw (7/6/2011 10:13:45 AM)

I gotta get child locks to keep Cashie from bangin the damned cabinet doors in the hours when I sleep!

LadyP.. my kids dont have much interest in the bottle caps once they've disappeared..

my concern with the milktabs is that I will find PIECES of them.. I dont know if the beasts are EATING them, or just hiding the missing bits..LOL

tolove.. shoestrings are always a favorite, too.. just gotta make sure the fuzzybutts knwo that it's only ok when they are not ATTACHED to the shoes!!  LOL

LadyPact -> RE: Stop mrowing, heres a straw (7/6/2011 10:19:49 AM)

Nermal got her name from the Garfield comic strip.  Just like the stereotype, too.  While she isn't a kitten, she must have been the runt of the litter because she never got any bigger than your average six month old cat.  Knows she's cute and is terribly spoiled from the advantage.

GT, we never noticed any pieces missing, but I'm with you on the cabinets.  Jasmine can seem to open them just fine, but wants someone to come and "save" her once she gets herself inside.

GreedyTop -> RE: Stop mrowing, heres a straw (7/6/2011 10:26:07 AM)

Cashie seems to like getting himself out and letting the damned door slam LOUD.. monster.

BurntKitty -> RE: Stop mrowing, heres a straw (7/6/2011 10:43:06 AM)

YinYang opens the bathroom cabinet that's under the sink and goes in. It's unnerving to wake up bleary eyed (and pre caffeine) walk into the bathroom and have the cabinet open on my shin & meow a "G'morning Mommy".

Zelda prefers the cat food cabinet- locates an unopened bag of food & feeds herself.

To answer the OP- I bought infant socks, stuffed them with polyfill & catnip and sew the top up. They do love their 'nip.

FR

WTF are you all talking about ? You mean cats ?

It's simple, anything that hits the floor is a toy. And I mean ANYTHING.

T^T

tazzygirl -> RE: Stop mrowing, heres a straw (7/6/2011 12:19:54 PM)

Binxie is a bengal... and adores the dreaded "belt loop". lol

Seriously, the man will snag off a belt loop from a pair of old pants and she will play with it for hours. Currently, she has three... two she had hidden, and one she keeps dropping at my feet to be tossed so she can fetch.

She also likes bottle caps and small balls. I never said she was normal... lol

Oh, and reading through the thread...

Binxie loves challenges. She will open drawers if there is enough space for her paw to get in, climb through and see what she can pull out. And she knows where the catnip is hidden.

GreedyTop -> RE: Stop mrowing, heres a straw (7/6/2011 12:28:39 PM)

one of the stories I was gonna share with tj seems appropriate here, in light of your post, tazzy:

I used to be owned by a Siamese/tabby mix boy, called Simon.

When I was still living with an ex (Jay) we had a decent house in TN.

We had the place remodeled substainally, including new overhead cabinets in the kitchen.

we also shared space with Baby (cute as button, DUMB as a box of rocks).

We kept the 'nip stash in a plastic tub (formerly a margarine tub), on an upper shelf, behind glasses in a deep corner of the new cabinets.

One day, Jay and I got home, only to find both Baby and Simon passed out in Nip Bliss!!

It seems that Simon (based on knowing his prior smarts) had managed to not only get the nip tub out of the cabinet..without knocking down any of the glasses.. buyt he had CHEWED the tub open./.

I call it the Great Catnip Caper!

Somewhere, I still have printed photos of the aftermath.. including Simon with his body (and apparently no head), since his head was firmly plnted inside the tub...

LOL

heeey I want my bengals to play fetch!

LaTigresse -> RE: Stop mrowing, heres a straw (7/6/2011 12:56:58 PM)

In our house, the cat IS a toy.

You wanna hear loud.......imagine an 85# German Shepherd playing with one of the super tough Kong toys in a fibre glass shower/tub unit........

My roommate purposely puts a pillow on top of his feet so when the runt(wet paw) goes to sleep on it he can thrust his feet into the air... "The Cat-a-pult"
It's ok though. Come football season I have a Ravens license plate I'm screwing into his Steelers affiliated car.

LaTigresse -> RE: Stop mrowing, heres a straw (7/6/2011 1:06:04 PM)

I am not sure either of the dogs that love tormenting the cat would be much affected by a similar retaliation.

I have come to the conclusion that the cat is a masochist and loves being mauled by them.

Bengals crave the attention. They will not be ignored.

You do realize you may die as a result.

BKSir -> RE: Stop mrowing, heres a straw (7/6/2011 1:20:30 PM)

Hell yeah, they love straws! Also the caps from 2L. bottles, tightly wadded up aluminum foil (so they can't just shred it), paper bags, old shoestrings are all favorites around here. Especially if you put an old shoestring on a stick from the yard. Screw spending 18 bucks, I can make the same damn thing for free, and it'll last longer. Alas, one of our little fuzzmonkeys has a thing for socks. She'll have a fit all night long if I don't throw my socks across the room for her to chase and attack for a second. And it has to be both of them. She'll catch the first one, then sit by it staring at me, ready to pounce, waiting for the second.

My daughter and I had the same problem with Clarabelle. Our solution was to cut up a gallon milk into a bunch of plastic butterflies. We strung them into a make shift mobile on the end of a bungee cord... she won't leave it alone.
