It's a HUGE DEAL, so huge The Murdoch Gang is closing down a  money maker in their portfolio.. They are terrified of what else is going to be uncovered and how it's going to bleed across News International brands with advertisers. Keep in mind, this paper has had it's doors open for 160 years. There is no real parallel for this, and it shows that Murdoch is vulnerable. Which it was widely held prior to the recent course of events that he was far to powerful to mess with. The following article details what is going on right now.

The Formatting of paragraphs did not transfer as it appeared in the post editor, so here is the link to the gazette story, so you can read it in an easier on the eye form:

http://www.montrealgazette.com/news/world/Murdoch+statement+News+World+closure/5065755/story.html

James Murdoch, chairman of News International, the British newspaper arm of News Corporation, has announced the group will close its embattled tabloid publication, News of the World. In a statement, Murdoch said this Sunday's issue would be the paper's last. The following is his full statement, made to staff on Thursday:

"I have important things to say about the News of the World and the steps we are taking to address the very serious problems that have occurred. It is only right that you as colleagues at News International are first to hear what I have to say and that you hear it directly from me. So thank you very much for coming here and listening. You do not need to be told that The News of the World is 168 years old. That it is read by more people than any other English language newspaper. That it has enjoyed support from Britain's largest advertisers. And that it has a proud history of fighting crime, exposing wrong-doing and regularly setting the news agenda for the nation. When I tell people why I am proud to be part of News Corporation, I say that our commitment to journalism and a free press is one of the things that sets us apart. Your work is a credit to this. The good things the News of the World does, however, have been sullied by behaviour that was wrong. Indeed, if recent allegations are true, it was inhuman and has no place in our Company. The News of the World is in the business of holding others to account. But it failed when it came to itself. In 2006, the police focused their investigations on two men. Both went to jail. But the News of the World and News International failed to get to the bottom of repeated wrongdoing that occurred without conscience or legitimate purpose.Wrongdoers turned a good newsroom bad and this was not fully understood or adequately pursued. As a result, the News of the World and News International wrongly maintained that these issues were confined to one reporter. We now have voluntarily given evidence to the police that I believe will prove that this was untrue and those who acted wrongly will have to face the consequences. This was not the only fault. The paper made statements to Parliament without being in the full possession of the facts. This was wrong. The Company paid out-of-court settlements approved by me. I now know that I did not have a complete picture when I did so. This was wrong and is a matter of serious regret.Currently, there are two major and ongoing police investigations. We are co-operating fully and actively with both. You know that it was News International who voluntarily brought evidence that led to opening Operation Weeting and Operation Elveden. This full co-operation will continue until the Police's work is done.We have also admitted liability in civil cases. Already, we have settled a number of prominent cases and set up a Compensation Scheme, with cases to be adjudicated by former High Court judge Sir Charles Gray. Apologizing and making amends is the right thing to do.Inside the Company, we set up a Management and Standards Committee that is working on these issues and that has hired Olswang to examine past failings and recommend systems and practices that over time should become standards for the industry. We have committed to publishing Olswang's terms of reference and eventual recommendations in a way that is open and transparent. We have welcomed broad public inquiries into press standards and police practices and will co-operate with them fully. So, just as I acknowledge we have made mistakes, I hope you and everyone inside and outside the Company will acknowledge that we are doing our utmost to fix them, atone for them, and make sure they never happen again.Having consulted senior colleagues, I have decided that we must take further decisive action with respect to the paper. This Sunday will be the last issue of the News of the World.Colin Myler will edit the final edition of the paper. In addition, I have decided that all of the News of the World's revenue this weekend will go to good causes. While we may never be able to make up for distress that has been caused, the right thing to do is for every penny of the circulation revenue we receive this weekend to go to organisations - many of whom are long-term friends and partners - that improve life in Britain and are devoted to treating others with dignity. We will run no commercial advertisements this weekend. Any advertising space in this last edition will be donated to causes and charities that wish to expose their good works to our millions of readers. These are strong measures. They are made humbly and out of respect. I am convinced they are the right thing to do.Many of you, if not the vast majority of you, are either new to the Company or have had no connection to the News of the World during the years when egregious behaviour occurred.I can understand how unfair these decisions may feel. Particularly, for colleagues who will leave the Company. Of course, we will communicate next steps in detail and begin appropriate consultations. You may see these changes as a price loyal staff at the News of the World are paying for the transgressions of others. So please hear me when I say that your good work is a credit to journalism. I do not want the legitimacy of what you do to be compromised by acts of others. I want all journalism at News International to be beyond reproach. I insist that this organization lives up to the standard of behaviour we expect of others. And, finally, I want you all to know that it is critical that the integrity of every journalist who has played fairly is restored.Thank you for listening."

I suspect that the real reason is to maximize chances that his takeover of BSkyB will go through.  The scandal would totally absorb media interest otherwise.

According to this article, the hacking's been going on for at least six years and there were two convictions four years ago: http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/europe/07/06/uk.phonehacking.explainer/index.html?hpt=hp_c1

Odd how some people can never come up with requested material without obfuscating.
This story is new this morning.. It is different to the other threads, because they have cut off one of its limbs to save the starfish whole.
However if that is not acknowledged , then stupid people will believe that murdoch deserves to have his huge monoply. despite the ugliness behind it, hoping it will go away.

maybe... but they wouldn't be closing down a whole division this abruptly if there hadn't been a sudden Reversal of Fortune with regard  to the advertising clients racing for the door... No, I think that may be the additional loss they envisioned, but I don't think it's the real root of why this happened at all.

Really... you think that the people who've been reading about Milly Dowler in all of this aren't aware that she disappeared almost a decade ago?
Point that matters is that it came to a head and the doors are closing BECAUSE of that.
And if there are folks around the world that don't want to be held in Murdoch's slimey claws any more, as far as I am concerned that's a MARVELLOUS development. And if they want to use patented Murdochian methods to interfere with his plan on as large a scale as possible, I support them.

Subtract all but what could be considered actual journalism (the UN YELLOW kind) and you've got a match book. But a match book has a greater street value CAUSE IT'S GOT MATCHES

There is a reason Murdoch and Co. have retreated to the United States. And when the full scale of how he hoodwinked the 'right' lumpen here dawns on them, he will be toast here too. Beck is just the first to bail.

The more aware republicans and libertarians already steer well clear of any worship of Murdoch or his media. The GOP politicians still 'sup with the devil' out of necessity.

But the Murdoch horse still has a few miles left in the thing.

No,this is new.

Announced today.

The closing of the most popular Sunday paper. One that`s over 150 years old.

The worst part of the scandal is the hacking of a phone belonging to a kidnap victim, which Police say interfered with the investigation.

Then there`s the 100 million pound pay-off slush fund used to pay off potential problem people.

Which makes it all very premeditated and un-forgivable.

What I leave on Rupert`s grave, won`t pass for flowers.

Its nice to know that our very own Insanity is all for hacking phones of kidnap victims,, only a leftist would be against a company for that silly reason right?    Its a free society.... until its not and the UK must be against free speech, not the fact that the NOTW has interfered in democracy itself, lied cheated and stolen dignity, discretion and profited from death and grief by cheating.

There are cons and I`m not kidding, who would suck off satan it`s self, if it gave them a network.

There could be ten kidnap victims further hurt or a hundred, the Sanitizer and his ilk would call it all liberal lies and or just another bash the right thing, like Firm did. You`ll never get through. That`s why they call it dogma.

Murdock is only a few steps above the devil.

Those who support him?.........

Not sure whether you know this Skippy, but he's an American citizen now.

My friends and I had party here to celebrate that event - we were so happy to know he was no longer an Australian, we felt it had to be worth a party!

Oh there`s going to be more threads.Plenty more, with plenty of fools defending him. There will be so much crap to answer for that an army of sanitizers won`t be able deal.

The last few threads will be about his paying huge punitive fines or maybe even jail for his son.

There are allegations that police were payed, to help them find stories or have inside info to exploit the stories.Boy when that one plays out, watch out.

They don`t have innocent till proven guilty there.

Being rich is less advantageous in the UK than in the states.

He won`t be skating with a slap on the wrist.

Murdock, will become pejorative term.

Advertisers will shun him like the Bubonic plague.

Accept of course,for the "memebers".
