There is no question that she was murdered and her body was hidden.  There is also no question that Casey did not act anything like a mother should whose child has just vanished.  Based on what I just said, I have a strong suspicion that Casey murdered her child or at least knew who did it.  But the strong suspicion isn't adequate to convict for murder.

I believe in our justice system. I think jury duty is a civil duty, and it must be a difficult, yet unpaid, job to do in a death penalty case. I am disgusted by all of the vitriol leveled at these people for doing a thankless job... and I think insulting their intellect and calling them "kooky" is just plain assed disrespectful, nasty, crass, and Nancy Grace is a fucked up piece of crap for talking shit about them

It's very odd that the vitriol seems to be levelled at level-headed and, as best I can work out, fair-minded people, when the real problem seems to be the particularly cack-handed investigations that formed the central core of the prosecution case.

girlygurl -> RE: What was your reaction when you heard... (7/8/2011 4:48:58 PM)

I was surprised when I heard the verdict.

I believe the prosecution failed to prove the mother had anything to do with the death, so I'ma blame them. If I was judge and jury I would have gone with the guilty verdict.

As a side note.... who the hell doesn't report their child (toddler) missing for 30+ days?

Given statements 1. and 2., it's a really good job you weren't on the jury, or indeed responsible for carefully considered justice anywhere.

Do me a favour; tell me your job doesn't involve any important decision-making or responsible actions that hold the lives of others in the balance. Coz ... well, I'm sure you can join the dots :)

That Casey Anthony was found not guilty? My reaction was like "Why God why?" and "Are you fucking kidding me!" I also kinda wanted to say "I was wrong there is no God." Though I do believe in him so I didn't say it outloud.

I was surprised the jury acquited her cuz it was such a friggin media circus (from biased to lots of hate) that I expected everyone and their dog automatically considered her guilty no matter how little real evidence was presented as proof.

1. someone whose child dies accidentally and thinks "holy shit they'll think I killed her if I report it"
2. someone who killed their child and wants to hide it

I heard that there was no cause of death recorded. The little girl could have died the way that her mother stated.

I was not very surprised. I figured it was a coin toss, at best. For the record I think that Casey Anthony probably killed her daughter or was a party to the child's death and knows exactly what happened. Having said that, they can't show how the child died. They can't show when the child died. The prosecution spent most of their time showing what a awful person Casey was. She's a liar but that doesn't prove she's a killer. The whole family seem to be liars, to be honest. It's a heart wrenching verdict to see happen but I think the jury made the accurate and correct call from a reasonable doubt point of view. I felt the same way about OJ. And like OJ, I expect Ms. Anthony to end up behind bars at some time for some other infraction. She is who she is.

You probably should quit tuning in to Nancy Grace so much.

A sillier law is hard to think of. What responsible parent needs a law to tell them to report a missing child?

"Responsible" parents don't. Worthless psychopathic cunts like Casey Anthony do.

Responsible parents don't need the law. Responsible people don't need laws about theft, rape or murder either; should we take them off the books?

My sentiments exactly. The whole point is to deal with those who don't know how to behave "responsibly."

Casey Anthony was tried and convicted by our wonderful free press.  She was then found not guilty by a jury of her peers looking at all the evidence.  I was not surprised that the jury differed from the press.  The press used emotions to convict, and the jury used fact as it was presented in a court of law to free her.

So tragic that a child is dead.  We will never know what happened.

Who's this Casey Anthony?

My exact thought... plus... and why do I care?

While I know who that is, I have no personal stake in the jury's verdict. I wasn't there when the child died, I wasn't in the courtroom or the jury box during the trial. I think that our justice system works amazingly well, even considering how the media likes to convict people & stir the public up emotionally.

This.

Fact is, kids are abused every day. Kids are neglected every day. Kids die every fucking day. Just not all of them are cute little white girls that have stories the media decided to turn into a three ring circus.

The Defense made it's case and the Prosecutor failed to make theirs "beyond a reasonable doubt" ~shrugs~

Actually, the case didn't make its case, as shown by the restrictions that the judge gave them on their closing argument. They did a great job of muddying the waters, and in my professional opinion as someone who was in the legal field for 20 years, I think the prosecution had the opportunity to do a better job of shooting their claims down. The defense, through the drowning claim created room for reasonable doubt.

There is also the fact that the prosecution did not do its job of addressing why those things didn't matter. They did have "lesser" charges listed, but if I remember they added "aggravated" to all of them (something Florida prosecutors tend to do a lot.

Focusing on primarily 1st degree, they missed the mark. They included the lesser offenses but spent no time explaining how they could be warrented. Instead they set their sites on the death penalty, which is a difficult thing to prove in all but very specialized cases.

Casey's ability to go out and enjoy herself was a big problem. Even if Caylee did drown by complete accident, making up stories for 30 days I think they could have made a strong case for the lesser offenses which did not carry the death penalty and therefore, Casey would have found herself not being released quite so soon.

I don't think it's the responsible ones the law is aimed at.

Since you cannot prove how the child died, you cannot convict of murder.

Actually that isn't true. The "smoking gun" isn't always necessary. A child doesn't end up in a shallow grave without something illegal having occured first of all, and second, the medical examiner ruled it a homicide, so therefore a murder was convicted. When there is liklihood that the death was caused by something other than natural causes, and they law enforcement is mislead for a long period of time by a woman who should have been frantic over not seeing or even talking to her child, it is obvious that something happened that shouldn't have.

People HAVE been rightly convicted on circumstances evidence. Scott Peterson immediately jumps to mind.
