Children need to be taught to read and write.  The font is irrelevant.  I simply print, and have no need for cursive.

I have a ton of letters that the nephews will not be able to read because they will be too dumb to read.

coookie -> RE: Should school teach cursive writing? (7/10/2011 7:55:24 AM)

So teach them. Why are we reliant on the education system to be the only ones to educate our youth?

pahunkboy -> RE: Should school teach cursive writing? (7/10/2011 8:03:34 AM)

That sounds like home schooling.    Is it even legal?

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Should school teach cursive writing? (7/10/2011 8:08:24 AM)

homeschooling is legal. what are you on about pahunkboy...?

GreedyTop -> RE: Should school teach cursive writing? (7/10/2011 8:11:22 AM)

good lord, hunky.. my cousin has homeschooled all of her 7 kids..
they each play a musical instrument, the oldest is applying for (and likely to be accepted into) a prestigious university on the east coast, they are all better educated than most public school students..

oh, and they all have immaculate cursive writing.. but that is neither here nor there *snerk*

*edited to correct a letter*

coookie -> RE: Should school teach cursive writing? (7/10/2011 8:12:11 AM)

lol teaching your child any skill is legal. I taught my kids how to canoe. I taught them how to read before they went to school. It is our jobs to teach children.

What stops you to teach them cursive writing [8|]

Most of my best stuff I did learn from people other than my parents and teachers...

^ they are 640 miles away.   But you know what- I have no problem teaching the kids on my block.  Set up a picnic bench and such.    I already like to show them how to garden.

Just occurred to me, did you ever try to read a doctor's prescription ? That could be half of the problem here, people all getting the wrong drugs. Just any random drug. It makes sense.

T^T

FelineFae -> RE: Should school teach cursive writing? (7/11/2011 2:55:50 AM)

Valid point, Termy.
Why aren't the public schools still teaching Latin ?

First they did away with Latin, now script ... [sm=gaah.gif]

masternoname -> RE: Should school teach cursive writing? (7/11/2011 4:55:30 AM)

But then it is easier to feed them lies and get them to believe you.

I agree.

Not only this- but why would we want anyone to be unable to read it???  That makes a person illiterate.

DesFIP -> RE: Should school teach cursive writing? (7/11/2011 2:42:41 PM)

My son took the SATs. It starts off with an ethical code that the kids need to copy in cursive and then sign their name to. He said writing in cursive was the hardest part of the test.

When he asked me why this was done, I hazarded a guess that a handwriting expert would more easily compare cursive writing samples had they challenged whether someone really took the exam or had a ringer do it for him.

Except for your signature on a check, it's unnecessary. No office is without a computer. When a bill is suggested for the legislature, it isn't done in cursive. Neither is an order for 500,000 widgets at $2.95 apiece.  We don't use cursive on the computer, instead we use a keyboard with an assortments of fonts and font sizes.

This is like debating whether or not kids should still be taught to use Roman numbering. When was the last time you balanced your checkbook in that? It's a dead skill with no call for it.

Then your son  is not literate.    Hard does not cut it.

I don't think you quite understand the meaning of the word 'literate'.

tiggerspoohbear -> RE: Should school teach cursive writing? (7/11/2011 4:37:24 PM)

I went to grade school when being taught cursive in grade 2 or 3 was a step up from printing.  And it considered great by most of the students.  But back then, they also didn't diagnose dyslexia or any other form of learning disability.  It may become a lost art, but I still write cursive, it's a habit.  Harder to do now that carpal tunnel syndrome has come back, but so has printing.  Holding a a writing implement is an effort.  Why I love to write with either a gel pen or a fountain pen.  Yes, a fountain pen.  Mine's not an expensive one, the ink cartridges are still available, and I think it looks lovely.

Schools all over industrialized nations keep making cuts to their educational systems, and yes, parents can teach, but we're losing something here.  How will they get employment when they graduate if they don't have the basics down?  I know that my sister, a kindergarten teacher, has told me that they no longer teach "proper" spelling, as in accurate, but phonetic as the other isn't important anymore.  This is just too much.  I don't know how many bosses I worked for where I wasn't the one they came to so that the letter or document was sent out with correct spelling and grammar?

Literate means a person can read and WRITE.      Not print- WRITE.

CreepyStalker -> RE: Should school teach cursive writing? (7/11/2011 5:12:37 PM)

Heh, kids these days learn computer related skills in primary school that most adults have spent years trying to catch up with. If you want to think being able to do joined-up handwriting better than them makes you cleverer, far be it from me to deny you that small comfort.  :-P

Yes he is literate, he does know how to read, write and do math.
Literate has nothing to do with the ability to read. Perhaps you ought to look up the definition of literate.

He's done all his schoolwork from middle school forward on the computer. They don't get worksheets, the assignments are online. At no point has any teacher said "This is a great paper but you fail because it isn't handwritten". If there's no call for a skill, and there is a great deal of call for other skills, then the schools must update themselves to teach the skills that are needed, not those that aren't.

pahunkboy -> RE: Should school teach cursive writing? (7/11/2011 5:28:58 PM)

It is the English language.   This makes these kids as useless as illegals who also do not want to learn the language.

and literate MEANS -  reading and WRITING.

Definition of write: 1. a. To form (letters, words, or symbols) on a surface such as paper with an instrument such as a pen.

I see nothing that says writing is only legit if it's done in cursive.

Which cursive font, according to you, is the correct one? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cursive
