I personally think that with someone new, it's best to get out there and get to know the community. Otherwise, you're an island dependent on one source.
Again, I absolutely DON'T disagree with your advice... I just know, first hand, there are many outside the public/community thing that are worth having as well.
As to said "island"? I don't know... with forums such as this one, I think there's great opportunity for a host of different viewpoints -- i.e., more than just "one source" for info, yes/no???
I agree with you. But I also remember how it was to be in sub frenzy and wearing the rose colored glasses. I'm not saying that the only people worth knowing are those out in the community, but I think it's a good idea to know your community.
