This is probably a stupid question, but looking through the craigslist want ads, i frequently see a bizarre series of random words at the bottom of the page. It's a bunch of random words, not a sentence, and the words are unrelated to the ad or to each other. They are also sometimes picked from different languages (English, French, Spanish). Does anybody know what this is?

Pam, I looked through a bunch of craigslist local ads, and didn't see any of the random words. My first thought was "keywords", so that the ad would show up on a search, but without seeing an example, I don't know.

Maybe a link?

my first thought would be keywords for searches, like califchick said.
they could also be indicative of a spam account posting fake ads.

I've never seen anything like that on CL, but sometimes on Usenet. People might be using it as a code to alert coconspirators for some purpose. This avoids making an email connection.

I'm guessing that the ad is trying to get you to click on the link which is probably a virus or other malware.

First link has already been flagged for removal.

As here, if enough folks flag it, it auto-magic-ally dissappears.

Actually it's nothing sinister at all. It's just us schizophrenics letting the voices talk to each other. They get lonely too, even delusions need company.

I think word salad is an attempt to avoid something getting flagged automatically as spam.

Then people ha ve to report it but at least it is there for a little while.
