Not really. Most of the teens/early 20-somethings I know leave their computers on & logged into Facebook all day long.

My daughter's watching tv in the den but her laptop's on with facebook in her room. My son and stepson are frequently to be found in the kitchen but the XBox is left on. Hell there are times when I'm away all day but the computer is left on to CM. What is this supposed to prove? Nothing at all.

That David doesn't think things through to their logical conclusion. He's impressed by the raw stats because he's into viral marketing on social networks (in other words...spamming), and the idea of there being people in the UK actively on Facebook for 20 million hours a day makes him all hot and spermy.

It's kinda sad that the spammers have taken the term "going viral" and try to turn it into a negative thing, it's the latest buzz word because most people don't understand what it means. It's usually when something is so good, funny or outrageous that it inspires people to share it. The ads of Agent Provocateur usually go viral, because uhhh hot women, usually quite famous, in risky lingerie, risky shots, unusual camera angles, themes very much on the pulse and just balancing on that thin line between obscene and sexy... Sheesh, I wonder why so many people watch it when it's advertising...

There were a couple of bands that shot to fame this way, but then everybody tried to do it and interest disappeared. Most ad and PR agencies are trying to come up with something that will go viral naturally (people genuinely sharing and not having spammers polluting the social networks - doesn't take long for those to catch on and make it more difficult) but not a lot of them achieve it. Some ads have become classics but that's because a good advertising campaign is an art in itself.

Of course SEO works, and google adwords work, but that isn't really going viral, it's basically paying a firm who outsources to a bunch of people who can't get other work to spend their days making "blog comments" where they leave the homepage address of the company they have to push in blog comments or guest book comments and get frustrated because they're getting paid peanuts...
