Thirteen mostly conservative California counties would break away to create a 51st state known as South California under a proposal by an elected official that would have to clear major hurdles to succeed.

Republican Jeff Stone has asked fellow members of the Riverside County Board of Supervisors to support a motion to bring together officials from the 13 counties to discuss the idea.
A vote on the proposed meeting is scheduled for Tuesday.
Stone said California is too big to govern, a situation that has led the state to raid local government coffers because of runaway spending. He knows it will be a challenge to create another state but doesn't believe it's an impossible task."We are sending a message," Stone told the Los Angeles Times.http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Latest-News-Wires/2011/0711/51st-state-would-be-a-red-state

Only a Republican would think of splitting a state.

Actually Democratic politician in northern CA have talked about splitting the state as well. What the southerners seem to forget is the only reason the population can live there is because of water the state takes from the north and gives to southern CA. if the state were to split the water situation would change.

Is anyone considering what actually gives a geographic area recognition as a "state"?
Call me crazy and all but I don't think it fucking matters what Jeff Stone fucking says or does. But nice try Jeff, and thanks for once again proving why republicans are in general, unqualified to hold public office. Last time this was done, wasn't it referred to as "secession" ?
I think it's a lot more complicated than that,... and so do, even some very conservative individuals who seem to understand the laws the way I do:

WHAT????!!!!

NO WAY!

NO FUCKING WAY!

CALIFORNIA CAN WAIT IT'S FUCKING TURN!

If any state gets to split itself in two, New York gets first dibs. Some of us here would love to give New York City the boot. They can even keep the name if they want.

Of course since accomplishing anything at all in California means putting it to a popular vote......I get a little confused when you say "the libs have been sucking CA dry " are you suggesting that there is some local law that bars neo cons from voting ?

Only a Republican would think of splitting a state.

Maine used to be part of Mass , there were no Republicans in 1820.

The major population centers like LA and San Fran are far left strongholds the stauchly conservative parts of the state are simply outnumbered.   But in spite of your post you knew that.

Tennessee used to be part of NC.  There were no Republicans in 1796.  I have a feeling you should google "Lost State of Franklin" to see the most likely fate of S Cali Seceeding.

Yes I did....are you suggesting that there is a flaw in allowing the majority to make decisions ?
Or perhaps you are suggesting that there is a flaw present when the majority happens to have a liberal bent?
Is it not a tenet of the Republican party( which ,from your posting history you would seem to be a member ) that state rights is sacrosanct ?Does that truth not hold ?Or is that truth flexible ? If so,is that flexibility called into action whenever too many liberals happen to gather in one locale?

ME, an exclave of MA was cut out as a state to offset MO in the Missouri Compromise.

No, just pointing out that your post made no sense.  And that there is historical precedent as pointed out Maine was split from Mass to "offset Missouri"  in other words for political reasons.  As is often the case you assume many things about my post that were neither stated nor implied.  I haven't even taken a side on the proposed split.

Just out of curiosity how many of those who oppose So California would support DC statehood even though DC was created so that the Capital would not be in any state?

I was not aware there was a major push to grant statehood to DC....I have heard tell of an effort to gain representation for the District.."but that is not the same thing as statehood....but perhaps you knew that, though I am hesitant to make that assumption...especially in your case.

I would be opposed to DC being granted statehood for several reasons, but singularly amongst them is:

United States Constitution
Article 1, Section 8, Clause 17

There has been a recurring move for DC statehood last under the Clinton administration, not just representation but full statehood.
I might as well state that while I kind of like the idea of 2 more relatively conservative senators I think that the idea of breaking up a state could set a bad trend.
