It is not hard to freeze water at 40 below zero (or less) Farenheit.  cold water is lighter than warm water, you can convince yourself of this by making a tall whiskey water, and dropping ice cubes in it, they float.  (then drink the whiskey water and throw away the ice cubes).

The cracks are caused by warm, cold, warm, cold secondarily, but unlike most gasses and liquids water expands when it freezes, so something has got to give.

How do they freeze? Well the ambient temperature is well below zero so the surface freezes over. The lake doesn't freeze solid, there is liquid water underneath the ice. And that's why the cracks are there. It looks like it's been broken because it has. As water freezes it expands, so as more of the water freezes it heaves up the existing ice and it cracks.

BTW ashjor, I think you may just have the single coolest avatar on here.

those are beautiful fucking shots!!

it abraham lake in alberta, a couple hours west of red deer. it's a man-made lake on the north saskatchewan. in the summer the water is a pale bluish turquoise, really fucking gorgeous, but i've never seen it in the winter before.

thanks hills, brings back memories.
