It is not hard to freeze water at 40 below zero (or less) Farenheit. cold water is lighter than warm water, you can convince yourself of this by making a tall whiskey water, and dropping ice cubes in it, they float. (then drink the whiskey water and throw away the ice cubes). The cracks are caused by warm, cold, warm, cold secondarily, but unlike most gasses and liquids water expands when it freezes, so something has got to give.
