Apparently the Legislative branch can bend over and leave the debt ceiling question up to the Executive branch.

ETA: Dump. them. ALL

Owner59 -> RE: Congress Relinquishes their Elected Duties (7/12/2011 4:31:53 PM)

All the talk and bloviating about leadership and responsibility and our children`s future yada yada from republicans and when it`s time to lead and take responsibility,we get republican shirk.

Which rhymes with jerk.

DarkSteven -> RE: Congress Relinquishes their Elected Duties (7/12/2011 4:37:30 PM)

This is stunning me.  I can't decide if it's a statesmanlike move that places the greater good over the GOP agenda, or a weenie move that runs away screaming from actually having to deal with the fact that they have to compromise.

The threat to not raise the debt ceiling was the GOP's trump card, albeit its nuclear option.  They're betting that they'll be able to claim that Obama made all the wrong stances after they handed him carte blanche.  I suspect that the Tea Party faction won't be pleased.

mnottertail -> RE: Congress Relinquishes their Elected Duties (7/12/2011 4:43:00 PM)

The right wing of the republican party all the way thru teabaggers to neo-cons to hard right of that, whatever is in there in the house is fucking inept....period.

Oh tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations will get jobs jobs jobs!!! Wrongo!!! Now they want to slide further down the slippery sloppy slope of Corporate Appeasement.  Oh this'll get 'em.  What's next? Oh, the business climate of interference........yeah, fucking asswipe by imbeciles.

The same fucking rules that were there when the economy was doing good are there still.  That aint the fucking problem.

Oh the democrats shoulda done, woulda done, coulda done, hey teabaggers got the helm, fuck that, you're there and you are fucking up America in panjandrum style.  You are presiding over the largest debt in America's history and you are responsible, you own it.

Out with the shiteaters, until we get somebody in there that can get this  fixed.

It is a weenie move. A few weeks ago they were claiming Obama couldn't raise the debt ceiling without their say-so, they've changed their tune and the strategy. By handing it to Obama, they can slam him with whatever ill effects may occur and claim no responsibility.

That's the part that doesn't compute.  If they abdicate all responsibility, they lose a lot of their right to whine about what happens.  Of course, they'll get a deal far less favorable to them than what they could have negotiated.

How much do they get paid to wash their hands of doing their jobs?

Owner59 -> RE: Congress Relinquishes their Elected Duties (7/12/2011 6:52:34 PM)

Weenie/weasel move...cowardly,childish,transparent,selfish,ball-less,lazy,shifty,conniving,AOL,pussy,wussie,yellow.

Republicans are more afraid of Grover than they are of our money issues.

This is like the husband/drunk, storming out of the debt/credit counsiling session, leaving his poor wife and at risk family to deal with his mess.

"abdicate all responsibility, they lose a lot of their right to whine"

You don`t know this set of quitters if you think normal logic applies here.

These con "leaders" are as shamless as a lose dog and as dishonest as Benedict Arnold.

Steven, you are forgetting how many among the far right wing have short memories. And how easily they will forgive those things they can not forget.

I was stunned too. Who the heck needs a whole THREE silly branches of the government. Let them pick and choose what will keep them at the trough!!

Obama was playing chess while the kids in Congress were playing tiddly winks and missing the cup. There is nothing in this move but pure fear predicated on the fact that the bozos are going to lose their jobs if they move AT ALL from the headlights which have them frozen. Fuck 'em.

It's pathetic and they are cowards and beyond that, they are traitors.

The Writers got it right. It's too much power for a single man. Fucking assholes. FUCK. Those fuckers took oaths of office to defend and fucking uphold our Constitution not destroy it .. mother-fucking, ass kissing brown-nosing bastards.

Check-fucking-mate.

I am disgusted.

ladyneedshelp -> RE: Congress Relinquishes their Elected Duties (7/12/2011 9:29:54 PM)

Congress has not gave up any powers.....that was a stupid bill put forth by one stupid idiot and it will not go anyywhere! I bet ya'll believe the politicians who say s.s. won't be paid or we will default on our debt if the ceiling is not raised. Money will still be comming in. .s.s. is not tied to the deficit. By Aug.2 the checks are already printed and enroute. It means the govt will have to choose what they spend the money on. The democrats are quick to make people think and fear if the govt does not get the money they will not be able to keep the cops firefighters or teachers....why not stop the bullsshit before they layoff? Funds for the arts could be halted....funds for the seals.....funds for the senator mertha airport that gets 5 coustomers a day.

What is the point of the debt ceiling? They just raise it when they reach it...why have it? It's been raised like 6 times in the last 10 years.... And when Obama was a senator he voted aginst raising it....said it was putting more debt on our children and it showed a fundamental lack of leadership........what's changed????????

slvemike4u -> RE: Congress Relinquishes their Elected Duties (7/12/2011 9:43:54 PM)

Voting no..when it already has enough yea votes is simply a statement....nothing more.Refusing to allow the fed to continue to meet it's obligations...that is something else.Perhaps if you had ever received the help you so sore
Y need you might be able to see the distinction.

Yep.  And when Bush was President, Cantor voted to raise it.

The economic climate's changed.  The impossible position of spending cuts/tax increases, both of which remove money from the private sector, while at the same time not increasing unemployment.  It's no surprise that Dems are claiming spending cuts will hurt recipients while the GOP is claiming tax increases will hurt the economy.

And of course, the political climate's changed.  The GOP's claiming, with some justification, that Obama's hurting the economy.

tweakabelle -> RE: Congress Relinquishes their Elected Duties (7/13/2011 4:14:10 AM)

Don't underestimate the Right's ability to change tack mid stream and weasel out of their share of responsibility for the mess.

Our Opposition Leader here, a certain Tony Abbott (aka 'The Mad Monk' ideologically aligned with Genghiz Khan) thinks climate change is a "lot of shit". So he's running a huge scare campaign against the Govt's proposal to introduce a carbon tax to force polluters to stop polluting.

On Monday he went to a coal mine and predicted that the carbon tax would ruin the coal mining industry, damage exports, stop investment in the coal industry ..... blah blah blah. Why it's so bad, the Mad Monk declared, the very coal mine he was visiting would be forced out of business and close down ......A few hours later, a $5 billion takeover bid for that very mine was announced, which kind of poked a little hole in his story.

You would think he would run down the coal mine and hide for a bit after being caught out so badly. Not the Mad Monk. The takeover bid, he pronounced, barely pausing for breathe, was a cheapskate bid by a foreign company trying to take over an Australian asset at rock bottom prices. Share values in the coal industry had been driven through the floor by the Govt's carbon tax proposal! [:D]

What a moron! Expect more of the same America! [:D]

housesub4you -> RE: Congress Relinquishes their Elected Duties (7/13/2011 6:41:49 AM)

It shows how spine the GOP really is.  Instead of making tough choices they run and hide ldumping it all on the President.

So they can sit back and whine about how they did not raise the debt ceiling, Obama did, they did not cut anything Obama did, they did not agree to tax increases Obama did

So no backbone to stand up to their corporate money supply, the Hell with doing our job, says the GOP let the Dem's make all the tough choices, the GOP is to scared to.

mnottertail -> RE: Congress Relinquishes their Elected Duties (7/13/2011 7:17:10 AM)

So the deal is, that they give him the authority to raise the debt ceiling in three installments, each time proposing cuts to offset which they don't have to consider, their spin will be see?  Dems are spending and raising the debt ceiling and the neo-cons will buy it.

Obama should walk up to McConnell and say, "Fuck you, suck my dick, you and your party are not only inept cowards, but have no idea what's in the constitution."  Doing it on TV breaking on Faux Nuxe would only add to the luxurious piquancy of the situation.

juliaoceania -> RE: Congress Relinquishes their Elected Duties (7/13/2011 7:20:48 AM)

The Republican Party is filled with a bunch of nihilists that would rather burn it down than see Obama get 4 more years. It is the most unpatriotic immature behavior I have ever seen in my life. There are no adults in the Republican Party... just a bunch of James Dean wannabes that stole their parent's car and are willing to run it off a cliff to hide the evidence.

housesub4you -> RE: Congress Relinquishes their Elected Duties (7/13/2011 10:57:04 AM)

Actually the GOP HAS been trying to get some things done...most require a change to our constitution here is a list of some of the changes they have put forth in the last 2 years......

conservative agenda to strip American democracy of any meaning and force conservative governance upon the American people:
  • Affordable Care Act Litigation: In 2008, elections didn’t work because we the people elected Barack Obama and gave him the majorities he needed to comprehensively reform the health care system. Conservatives immediately responded with an entirely fabricated constitutional argument against this law that relied on a constitutional theory that no one had ever even heard of before 2009. Even Judge Jeffrey Sutton, a former Scalia clerk and a leader of the conservative states rights movement, rejected this meritless attack on the Affordable Care Act.
  • Killing Medicare and Medicaid: In 1964, elections didn’t work, and the American people gave President Lyndon Johnson the congressional support he needed to enact Medicare and Medicaid. Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) would take away the American people’s ability to benefit from this law as well. He claims that the Constitution must be reinterpreted so that the federal government can’t do anything at all about “health care.”
  • Bringing Back Whites-Only Lunch Counters: In 1962, elections didn’t work, and the American people gave Johnson enough votes to pass a ban on whites-only lunch counters. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) disagrees with this outcome, so he would reinterpret the Constitution to make the Civil Rights Act of 1964 unconstitutional.
  • Putting Children To Work: In 1936, elections didn’t work, and the American people reelected President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and gave him an enormous supermajority in Congress. Roosevelt used this mandate to eliminate the exploitation of child labor. Sen. Lee also disagrees with this outcome, and would rethink the Constitution to make child labor laws unconstitutional.
  • Cutting Students Loose: Time and time again, elections haven’t worked because the American people elected a Congress that supports education programs. Numerous members of Congress believe that all federal education programs — from Pell Grants to federal student loans to public school funding — must be eliminated entirely because, in Sen. Tom Coburn’s (R-OK) words, “I don’t even think [education] is a role for the federal government, if you read the Constitution.”

I totally agree. What a bunch of worthless fucks. I think the same for any Dems that are willing to hide behind this shit too.

I don't want to hurt the economy by raising taxes. (Nor do I want Grandma to be eating cat food!!) Maiming our reputation to meet our obligations is not the answer. What a bunch of maggots that painted themselves into a corner and are willing to destroy our rock solid reputation to pay what we owe.

If we don't meet our obligations, the dollar will no longer be the reserve WORLD currency. Way to go, you spineless shits.
