ORIGINAL: pissdoll as a native angelino, i'm jumping into this one... the rodney king beating and aftermath was not a single event just focusing on one man. in the weeks leading up to this, we had a rising number of police brutality claims. there was footage from a few cases of white police officers beating african-american men and boys...all unarmed. those daring to shoot the videos were being harassed and threatened. rodney king, while unarmed, was hit 56 times with batons before taken into custody. he was outnumbered 5 to 1. most of us in the city were outraged. AND THEN...the court case was moved to simi valley, which was in ventura county, NOT los angeles. simi valley at the time was long known for being the KKK capital of california. again, there was outrage from the residents of los angeles. this seemed convenient...moving the case from a rich multicultural city, to a white suburb in another county known for not only its racist ties, but also for being a community where law enforcement lived and played in large numbers. the trial did not disappoint. the simi valley community did what we knew it would and let all of those officers off the hook. it was yet another case where the justice system took care of itself, and ignored the rights and the needs of its citizens. for any who think the actions of the police were just, i welcome you to familiarize yourself with the Christopher Commission and its findings. Thank you for this. No incident is ever simple. The riots weren't actually caused by Rodney King's actions, but by the police actions that had been leading up to this one incident. And the news media hasn't failed me on this one. My theory is that the news media puts out there whatever they want to get us upset about. If this had been one of the other black men who'd been beaten by the police but not publicized to the extent Mr. King was, we would never have read about it. But because it is about this one particular man, they chose to publicize it & their decision has resulted in just what they'd hoped for: a bunch of upset people arguing about this.
