WHY?
It would seem the pairings would be ;
master/slave
Dom/sub/
Sadist/masochist.
Top/bottom
If you cross those pairings  Id like to know why,

Nobody told me it was an Either/or thing. and you don't include switch, which also confuses me, but i have, at some time in my life switched. i tend, in fully submissive fashion, tend to do things which please or amuse my Domme. i have rarely fit into a preformed description in any part of my life

I am not a masochist. I don't enjoy pain or it takes a lot a lot of warmup to get me close to liking it.

Lilly actually nailed this in the first response, in My opinion. 

There's something about this question that makes Me wonder if there isn't some inkling of a soft voice in the background that's asking, "but how can a non masochist want to be with that sadist, rather than a loving, gentle Dom,  and now that you mention it, I'd be so much better for you".  Did this question happen to come up because you are wondering why some submissives are passing you up when you feel you are much better suited to them than the men they have actually chosen?

The world isn't black and white and neither are people. So you really can't sort people into just two categories or lists.
Every individual is unique as are their motives and tastes.

Nothing wrong with being a horse of a different color.

Hmm. I do what I do because I can. I'm a switch....a sadistic Domme and a masochistic sub. Also, I Top people sometimes and I bottom once in awhile for someone Daddy's showing how to do things. But Master/slave is too extreme for me. Yeah, it's all good. I choose to live outside the box.

i edited it a smidge to fit, but that's basically me there. =p
i think it would be kinda silly to say "but if you're a sub, you should be a with a Dom, not a Sadist" -- well what if a Dom IS a sadist? =p

People like to ask all sorts of esoteric questions and hope for a simplistic answer instead of asking whomever they would like to be involved with the right questions.

We are a society of labels; unfortunately not everyone or everything fits neatly inside them.

OMG. I used to get that all the time when we first got together. Master has a reputation as a hardcore sadist and while I have masochistic tendencies, I can't play on his level.

Guys in the community acted like it was a public service announcement to tell me how hard he played, forgetting that we had been friends for 3 years before we dated. Then once we became engaged some people actually made monetary bets on how long we would last.

So why are we together? Because it works.
