Because, as difficult as it may be to believe, I genuinely believe that this kind of hand-wringing, bullshit thread/action actually harms the cause of animal care.
By endlessly focusing (and the OP does this with any "fluffy animal" story of late) on a single animal, what results is what US news refers to as the "furry vote", and what UK news refers to as "the Blackie* Effect"; it does nothing to advance the cause of animal welfare one iota, as well as being dull, repetitive and pointless in extremis.
I've owned dogs as pets, and as working animals. And cats (as pets). And fish too (as pets, obviously - working domestic fish are a rare thing). It utterly sickens me to see the kind of boo-hoo bullshit that's been trotted out here; if the perpetrators can be found then they should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, but the "look at this! It's awful what they've done to this dog/cat/goldfish" (except it's never a goldfish, coz they're not "cute" enough) attitude is the worst kind of moron's tabloid response; it leads focus away from the core issues, one of a society's relationship with the animals it keeps as pets and uses as food.
It's twee, shallow as a tinker's bath, and completely pointless. And of course, if the OP wants to trot out said drivel then that's fine, but it's also fine if I point out my objections.
*long story; Spanish donkey that became a several news-cycle event, and was eventually repatriated by a UK tabloid, in competition with several other UK tabloids
