Ok....now my brain hurts.

Drink a little bit more before posting on this thread. It minimizes the side effects.

He didn't say he didn't have a point. He said he didn't have a question. Big difference. Try reading........luci

The basic reason that Aristotle messed up my view of time (and by extension a person's time) was because he basically proved that time must exist and yet it cannot exist.

Well, yes and no.

Time is relative, and like space, is not inherently linear in the Euclidean sense.

Time is also dimensional, and Aristotle was still working in the basic three.

there are actually only two parts to time, the future and past, with the present as the name we give the metamorphosis of one to the other.
From the little I got to read before Hanners made me stop, that is basically what Aristotle's view was. However he did seem to find there to be an issue with time having a built in contradiction which called it's existence into question.

Basically he said:

quote:

Time, it might be said, consists of the past, present, and future. But the past has been and is no longer, while the future is about to be and is not yet. And the now (that is, the present) “is evidently not a part of time”. Since no parts of time exist, how can time itself exist?

no, sorry, nice try, but not quite. what he did fucking say was
quote:

I was asked to elaborate, and rather than derail that thread into a bizarre direction, I'm starting this thread.

and later he said
quote:

I'm not asking a question, I'm just answering one.

see, if you read the post as a fucking whole, you would have understood that he wasn't making any fucking point, he was answering a question. my question in fact.

so there, now fuck off with your failed attempt at being superior and snarky, you are neither.

See...it's fucked up. So I don't pay much attention to time, and I attach no real value to it, since it doesn't really exist, it's a fabrication of our minds that is inherently flawed.

Time exists and it is considered the 4th dimension

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spacetime

Our perception of time changes, but our perception about much of reality is changeable... just because you perceive time in different ways does not mean it does not exist...

In my opinion nothing really exists outside of our perception of it anyways...

Termyn8or -> RE: Time...the impossible essential. (7/16/2011 11:00:29 PM)

Time will tell. How do you know that ?

Now here is omething.

Tell me the mass of time, or the density.

Note : your TI calculator will not be connected to the Cray for the duration of this test.

Haven't you read Einstein?

Depends on how much, how fast, and what other mass it's near.

Now tell me the mass of space.

xssve -> RE: Time...the impossible essential. (7/16/2011 11:30:41 PM)

Yeah, but time is relative - time at 49 isn't what is was at 19, I put up with a lot more shit then than I do now.

And what is time to a photon? Deflect a photon at it's source, and it's target trajectory alters, instantly - even across light years of space: as a wave, it simply is, and it's always right now.

Spicy stuff indeed!! I wanted to see for myself what Aristotle said, and discovered that it isn't in Metaphysics, but rather in Physics, (Book IV, sections 10 - 14). And Hanners won't let me read it now because it will take too long, so I'll have to read it tomorrow.

Hanners is a big meanie-pants bum-head!!

awww,.. yeah, she's a big meanie pants... but instead of reading boring old Aristotle, hopefully she has something much more fun to do to you.. i mean much more fun for you to do... [:)]

breath in the future, breath out the past. at any moment doing that is present.

~FR~ Some interesting ideas there, cool stuff.

erieangel -> RE: Time...the impossible essential. (7/17/2011 9:26:37 AM)

So time doesn't really exist. Can I use that as an excuse to be "late" for work?

Musicmystery -> RE: Time...the impossible essential. (7/17/2011 10:10:54 AM)

No. Time takes time.

Give it time.

erieangel -> RE: Time...the impossible essential. (7/17/2011 1:42:11 PM)

LOL

You can try, but I don't recommend it...I'm now unemployed....

erieangel -> RE: Time...the impossible essential. (7/17/2011 3:51:25 PM)

Sorry to hear Arpig. Actually, I'm often late for work...my boss usually doesn't even know I'm late. And when he does, he doesn't care. I mostly work alone, with no supervision unless I request a meeting, or on the occasions when the higher ups are pestering my boss about the lack of supervision he's been giving my program. I come and go pretty much as I please but haven't violated the trust that freedom allows me yet.

hardcybermaster -> RE: Time...the impossible essential. (7/17/2011 3:53:24 PM)

if time doesn't exist what have I just wasted by reading the above posts?
I think some brighter minds than are on these boards have grappled with these questions for thousands of years and come up with better theories and concepts.....or maybe I'm just wasted
