Saw HP7 on Friday and came out disappointed. The trend of the more recent movies continued where elements of the books plot were simply ignored apparently to make the movie more accessible to the 2 people who were going to see the movie without having already read the book. The fact that one of these elements was the one the book was named for didn't seem to matter. My favorite scene from the book was poorly done and amost seemed forced into the movie (Mrs' Weasley and Bellatrix).

Also the 2d show was sold out so I had to watch it in 3d and there simply wasn't enough 3d effects to make wearing those stupid glasses over my prescription eyeglasses worth while.

As to SF and Fantasy movies I'm looking forward to, I had high hopes for John Carter until I saw the trailer Friday (I should have known Disney would screw it up). Captain America next Friday is a film I've been looking forward to all year.

I'd love to see the Pern novels (DragonQuest would be best) as a movie with good special effects.

loved the pern books

the TC books lost appeal for me after the 3rd, I think..

too much whining in them (kinda like the twilight books... )

Orson Scott Card has two GREAT series (IMO) that I'd love to see put on film: the Ender series, and the Alvin Maker series...

Ender, especially, would lend itself to 3D

Thank you, Monkey, you've just given me a new series (the Ender series) to buy and read. Much appreciated.

Edited to ask: Is this a good way to start? http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/search/?keywords=Orson%20Scott%20Card&pageSize=12

I thought the 70's and 80's Star Wars movies were great. Didn't like the later ones. Never got into the Harry Potter movies. Read all the books - they were ok.

This Harry Potter fan fic rules:

or download the ebook here: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/2269863/Less_Wrong
It's the first Harry Potter book retold as if Harry had been raised by a physics professor to be a hyper-rational, quasi-Vulcan scientist with ambitions to take over the world to make it run more efficiently. Super, SUPER fun...

Ender's Game is a Must Read.

Warning - Speaker for the Dead  and Xenocide are very different.

The Shadow Ender's are quite good and get back to the Ender flavor

AND please, not that vampire and werewolf drivel. I'll kick your ass.

Try Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series. Yes it's vampires and werewolves but this is a whole nuther thing; the books are AWESOME! Just make sure to read them in order or some things won't make sense.

You forgot the kinky sex!!!

LKH's writing deteriorates as her series progress, but she's still fun.

I liked Merry Gentry as well - fairies, goblins, more kinky sex. Sign me up for Team Mistral.

Thanks kalik but if there is an order to the books, I'd like to read them in order

but not sparkly teenage boys.
they are supposed to be scary.

But not that kind of scary...

True, glittering and sparkling more than an explosion in a sequin factory is kinda scary, but not in a moody, sexy way!

Should anything bite me, suck my blood and make me immortal, I demand that he's dark, sexy and dangerous, not a freaking 70's disco ball!

PainObjectForUse -> RE: Harry Potter ends~ (7/17/2011 9:58:39 AM)

Ursula K, Le Guin - Tales of earth sea

Juliet marillier - Sevenwaters trilogy

These are good collections also.

Can you guarantee that I'll be immortal and sort of forever young (well, a bit late for that now anyway but you get my drift), I won't be too fussy regarding gender and hair [;)]

I loved the Harry Potter series. Absolutely loved those books.
I think they did a great job with the movies.
Loved LOTR also.
Star Wars I could live without.

Yep. And it seems like I have been reading them forever and forever. LOL

I have not picked up Towers of Midnight, yet. I will likely do that soon.

GreedyTop -> RE: Harry Potter ends~ (7/17/2011 10:47:32 AM)

Zephy.. yeah, start with Ender's Game.

I read the first 4 of WoT, then got bored.

I love the HP boooks! I've seen a few of the movies, but out of order... eventually, I'll have to pick up the inevitable boxed set...
