Iowa congressman, family safe after home invasion
quote:

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A home invasion at Rep. Leonard Boswell's Iowa farm ended when his 22-year-old grandson fetched a shotgun and aimed it at the intruder, according to a statement from the congressman's office. No one was seriously injured.

The incident started about 10:45 p.m. Saturday when an armed man came in through the front door, attacked Boswell's daughter, Cindy Brown, and demanded money, the statement said. Boswell, 77, heard his daughter's screams, came into the entryway and attempted to disarm the intruder.

As they struggled, Boswell's grandson, Mitchell Brown, got a shotgun from another room. When he pointed the shotgun at the intruder, the man fled into the fields around the house outside Lamoni.

Boswell's wife, Dody Boswell, 75, also was home during the attack. His spokesman Grant Woodard said the whole family is safe and unhurt, aside from some scrapes and bruises

Thank God for the right to keep and bear arms, huh?

Thank god the grandson obviously knew enough about guns not to fire...many people don't.

Yep. Simply the introduction of an armed homeowner/resident can be enough to stop a criminal attack, without a shot fired.

Just an additional factoid; the congressman may be a Democrat, but he's had the NRA's endorsement.

Shame the intruder wasn't caught.

That would have been a serious bonus, Steve, but it's still not an outcome to complain about. A congressman might even get a motivated detective on the case.

Similar situation after hurricane Andrew. A rifle pointed in their direction convinced several armed young gentlemen on My front walk to go elsewhere. No shots fired, noone hurt.

I would have if forced but I'm REALLY happy I didnt have to.

Similar situation after Hurricane Katrina.  Bought my brother the perfect restaurant gift for our restraurant; a Ruger SP 101 .357.

He used it four times shooting over people's heads.  That's my brother for ya.  He always did shoot too high.

Right Erie...great point.  By not shooting the intruder who got away in the dead of night, he lives on to attack other seniors who may not be so fortunate.

I'm going to disagree with your last 2 posts locked and it might seem I'm contradicting myself but here goes.

RE: your brothers situation after Katrina. I don't fire warning shots. A warning shot means I have one less round to use for serious business. If the guy next to you gets cut in half, you've been warned. Every round I fire will be at center of mass.

High warning shots are also a possibility of injuring innocents.

RE: the guy getting away. Let's hope that he had the fear of God put into him and maybe he will have sense enough to not break into any more houses.

No shots fired is always a good outcome. If shots are fired, make em COUNT.

Fair enough.  I only fire warning shots at those retreating.  Faced with what the grandson saw, had I been the kid I just would have shot him.  I had someone approach my car in a menacing fashion in Memphis many years ago and I drew down on him and said "Are you sure you want it go down this way?"  And I'm happy I did that.  Had he been armed, however, I would not have said a word.

One last thing on the kid not shooting.  You say that hopefully the fear of God got put into the guy and he will never do it again.  My experience has told me that home invaders are extremely brazen.  The likelihood that this guy will not do it again is, again, based only on what I have seen, very slight.

It was a shotgun. His choice was to shoot and hit both of them, shoot the fleeing felon in the back, or not shoot. He made the right choice.

Good point locked but you also have to realize that neither you nor I are in the grandson's shoes. If he didn't have really good clearance, he was better off not shooting. I would rather let a criminal get away or be injured myself than take a chance on injuring an innocent person. I also think that a good way to be arrested for murder is to shoot someone in the back. Threat is neutralized with no shots. Noone is hurt. All is well.
The grandson did a great job in a difficult situation and is to be commended..
