My cappuccino maker, it was reviewed a few years back by Which magazine which said it was almost as good as a mid-priced Gaggia but under half the price and just as well built.

My pizza oven thingy. I got it from an auction of a convenience store that closed.

It makes grilled cheese sandwiches, pizza, chicken nuggets, pizza rolls, etc......., it is built well, which is why I like it, as it was built for commercial use.

Sounds like a cool item for pizza but how can it do nuggets any better than a normal oven - maybe they would be better in a fryer?

You don't have to wait to preheat it, that's why I use it for nuggets, the oven can do everything it does, but you have to wait and wait for it to preheat, with this once I have the timing memorized I just throw them in there and turn the timer. Plus when you are cooking relatively small portions the oven seems like such a waste. So, short answer, I'm lazy, and impatient, and the outcome is better than a microwave for most things, if you can fit it in there, with approximately the same speed of a microwave. The oven is to slow, the microwave just doesn't cook right.

Shower, Swiss Army knife [smallest EVER], and mP3 player, in that order.

Interesting, it must use a different heating technology to normal ovens to be so rapid. I rarely wait for full preheating myself.

I know what you mean about microwaves. I only use them for heating up or cooking meals specially designed for them. I sometimes just use the conventional oven in my combi microwave for small items.

The bottle cap. Seltzer just isn't going to work with a cork stopper.

I am madly in love with my android phone. With real keyboard! It's the devil, of course, it feeds my hellish internet addiction, but I LOVES EEET!

I love mine too. At first I wanted an iPhone but the guy in the store took one look at my nails and said, nope, you need a keyboard.

I also love my iTouch, vibrator, GPS, microwave and DVR. I am dying for an iPad2.

Technology rocks for many things; other than the fact that communication has deteriorated.

I've never used a modern pressure cooker, I grew up with the old kind that could turn into explosive missiles...

My whole family has always used pressure cookers.  No one has ever had one blow up.  The only way I can see it happening is operator error as in not adding water, forgetting it's cooking on the stove, or not getting the lid sealed on.  I used the old fashioned kind until finding this dandy electric one a year ago.  It makes all meat fork tender in under 20 minutes.  Spaghetti sauce cooks in 2 minutes.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: fav piece of technology (7/18/2011 9:13:42 PM)

I never saw a pressure cooker blow up, either. It was just one of those Dire Consequences...

Thanks for the info!

You are all welcome.  Mine is a Cuisinart.  It cost about $69 but I've seen them for up to $100.  Not sure why the price seems to have gone up.

"Interesting, it must use a different heating technology to normal ovens to be so rapid."

I think most of them use a quartz heat lamp. The output is mainly infrared so it doesn't necessarily have to heat the air. Some stovetops use something similar.

Speaking of stovetops, I have this electromagnetic induction stovetop. Never could use it though becaue it only works well on cast iron pots and pans. The main selling point of them was you could have a pot boiling violently on top, remove it and immediately touch the surface and not get burned.

Anyway, I've found microwaves vary in quality. In some, all you want is to reheat coffee or maybe soup. To nuke pizza or anything like that you need a better one. I got my Mother one many years ago and did some pizza in it and could not believe how good it came out. That was an expensive oven though. Not a convection or a combo, just a microwave. I don't know what the difference is in the design, but there is something.

I don't know. One day I was writing about surrealism, and my pen ran out.

I'd say my 21,5 inch LCD and my 1 TB external hard drive. Solved all my problems of hard drive space, and I can store hundreds of episodes of shows to  watch, taken directly from the net.

I saw the aftermath of one blowing up. My paternal grandmother was trying to cook a chicken in one. It happened when I was a kid so I don't remember if there was a cause determined. But DAMN........I do remember the mess it made of her kitchen!

That woman seriously had no business in a kitchen. Great nurse, lousy cook.

Ah, brings back memories of my ZX80, David. Did you eventually get the rampack to boost it to 16K?

I suppose my favourite piece of technology is the laser. When I was kid they were the stuff of dreams and science fiction. Now, they are ubiquitous and cheap (laser pointers, CD/DVD/Blu-Ray burners/readers, barcode scanners).

There's a few specific pens I could name here. It's a shame you can't get posh refillable felt tips anymore, for instance. Parker used to do some great ones a while back.

Do you think writing about surrealism had any connection with the pen running out?

Speaking of writing devices, I nominate the fountain pen as a "fav piece of technology", truly a worthy advancement over the quill. I contend that the ball point pen was not a step forward but a step to the side, specifically the left (as opposed to the right).

Moonhead -> RE: fav piece of technology (7/19/2011 4:57:52 AM)

Fountain pen fan, eh? I wouldn't diss ballpoints too hard, though, as writing with a fountain pen can be an utter pig for southpaws.

Excuses excuses. Its a known fact lefties are prone to insanity and tend die younger. Such people should learn how to write correctly.
