Forwarded email claims President Obama has funded a $20 million resettlement of Hamas refugees to the United States via H.R. 1388 (aka H.B. 1388), a bill supposedly passed 'behind our backs' in Congress.

Analysis: Among other falsehoods, this message promotes the erroneous impression that H.R. 1388 (referred to above as "H.B. 1388"), a bill passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama in 2009, allocated taxpayer funds to resettle Hamas refugees in the United States. It did not.

The real H.R. 1388

The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act simply revised and reauthorized existing federal public service programs (such as AmeriCorps) to increase their scope and funding. (It did not, contrary to another false rumor, make public service "mandatory.") Far from being passed "behind our backs," H.R. 1388 was covered by the media during House and Senate debates, passed Congress with bipartisan support, and was signed into law with all the usual public hoopla.

It had nothing to do with refugees.

I don't either, especially when it results in 20 million being spent on helping Palestinians.  I'm sorry, I just don't believe in helping people adverse to this country in ANY fashion.  We pay and we help.  What does that do for our image abroad?  Nothing...  Take the 20 million and divvy it up amongst those that populate this board and see how many people it helps!!

It just so happens that few, if any of those refugees actually have ties to Hamas except for the fact that Hamas and the refugees are all from Palestine. So why shouldn't they be helped in relocating to a part of the world that is not torn by war, where others are trying to take their land, their homes, their lives? Or since it is the Jews committing those atrocities, is it somehow ok?

Status: offline 		This is why we need to get out of all those "refugee" and "asylum" programs.
We *still* have about 400,000 Central Americans here after Hurricane Mitch in 1998! When are they going to be repatriated?
And the same with Bosnians and Yugoslavians. There's still 300-400,000 of them in the USA and there hasn't been any fighting over there in more than a decade!
How long does it take to recover from a hurricane, a year, six months?
Why on God's green earth would we want to import terrorists into the USA?
How many Jewish Temples would be fire-bombed in the first few years?
It's like our govt. is running the govt. for themselves and not the American People. They're just ignoring the wishes of the American People.
The Congress needs to go right through the books and get rid of a whole bunch of laws starting right from the 1850's. I'm sure there's a lot of laws they wouldn't want to enforce from that period.
Here we go again! Getting involved in foreign countrie's problems while ignoring our own.

Status: offline 		Popeye, in the first place, if we didn't accept political or religious refugees, Albert Einstein would never have gotten US citizenship, he was a refugee from NAZI Germany.

Secondly, there is a very long and drawn out process that the Immigration and Naturalization service puts those wanting asylum through, IN OTHER WORDS THEY HAVE TO PROVE THEIR CASE.

The US has stricter guidelines than most other countries in this respect.

Status: offline 		The US gives $3 billion a year to the root cause of this particular problem. Palestinian refugees are one of the very few tangible returns the US gets for its cash subsidies of, and support for Israel.

It would make a lot more sense to save the $3 billion. This would go a long way to eliminating the reasons that force Palestinians to migrate in the first place. It would make the US (and the world, especially Palestine) far safer places. It would also make the USA far more popular internationally.
