Not much partisan fodder here, but an interesting read on urban planning, and the impact of culture on earthquake preparedness. 1 Million Dead in 30 Seconds In an increasingly urbanized world, earthquakes threaten unprepared cities with mass destruction.

You misread the real modern American political culture...money. What would the investor class much prefer to do ? Rather than pay taxes to shore up and reinforce infrastructure in preparing for earthquake, they much rather reap the profits from rebuilding [it] after the destruction. What's a million lives in America, when it comes to...making some real money ? Wars kill many more over history, most of which is designed for a profit.
