I have tomato plants in my garden, and while this is simply a visual flaw they seem to always have "scars" on them. I've seen this on other home grown tomatoes too and I see them developing - a crease sort of that closes while the tomato grows and by the time the tomato is ripe there is a long "scar" from the top to the bottom on most of them.

Anyone have any comments on how to prevent this?

cracking can happen when tomatoes get a ton of water after a period without much water; kinda like when a person gains weight/muscle really fast and gets stretch marks.

We put our plants on a drip system, they get the same amount of water, every day, so no sudden gorging or dry spells, which can cause the cracking. This year, no blemishes :)

Thank you everyone for your comments....I have been pretty faithful watering them, although when we expect rain I may not (which they said the other night we might get thunderstorms but we didn't), I'll try to be more precise next year (and the remainder of this year of course).

I had actually wondered if the tomato was actually a "merge" of two blossoms. It is also a possibility.

Yep. Doesn't affect the flavour at all!
