The Amy Winehouse death made me think of those people who have achieved money, fame, status - the things that I want and that I think I need to make my life complete - and who have not achieved fulfillment and contentment.  It always amazes me and saddens me when someone who "has it all" loses it.

How does it make you feel?

That's a poem I haven't read in a long time.

Since I have an 18 year old who has just been forced to recognize that he's inherited the familial tendency towards addiction, I used this as a teachable moment. That this is someone who was out of rehab for less than a month and see what happened. That either he is committed to his sobriety or he's going to be dead shortly.

Given the massive loss of life in Norway and China of late, where ordinary people suffered murder and tragic accident, the actions of some selfish, ungrateful, overrated skank committing "suicide by lifestyle" interest me not one iota.

Put simply, I couldn't give a toss.

Why should it affect me at all? I have a life of my own and I do not live it vicariously through the life of anyone in the public spotlight. When anyone else not in the "spotlight" with or without "it all" ends their life or dies tragically the world takes no notice of it. Yet, when a second rate celeb like Winehouse offs herself....the world is shocked....how could this have happened? Well guess what? This shit happens everyday. People die one way or another, it's the only sure thing in life. When the world takes notice of everyday people, I might actually care then.

If she had given some magnanimous contribution to mankind I might feel some sense of loss for the betterment of civilization. In grand scheme of life, she was little more than a minor footnote on the pages of history.

Phoenixpower -> RE: How does it affect you? (7/24/2011 8:25:00 AM)

It increases my pride of the troubled kids in care I worked with, that they got their shit together as adults, unlike her, despite very worse circumstances to grow up than she had [:)]

On a personal level, I never cared about folks who blew their opportunities and life the way she did [8|]

Her story makes me thankful that i have what i need as opposed to what i want.

it means when I'm counselling some young teen who thinks that getting drunk and stoned is 'ok' and any negative health effects won't hit until you're a pensioner, I can say "I bet Amy Winehouse used to say that too".

Harsh maybe, but perhaps it will mean her death isn't totally meaningless.

MissImmortalPain -> RE: How does it affect you? (7/24/2011 8:47:31 AM)

I actually just had a talk about this with a friend on facebook. He seems to believe that in many ways "we" as a people are at fault when something like this happens. He thinks that if we didn't pay to hear/see them. If "we" refused to pay attention to them, or demand they do something about their issues then trainwrecks like this wouldn't happen. I had to point out to him that I have never paid to see/hear her, or kurt cobain, or heath ledger, or britney murphy, etc. I do not hold my breath and wait for "train wrecks" and that when they happen in typical hollywood fashon for the most part I ignore them. It may seem unkind but as someone else already pointed out there are so many bigger things going on in the world. So many more real victims that honestly things like this don't affect me.

I used celebrity when counseling kids with eating disorders. You and i can see the connection, but many teens have an invincibility complex and damn, are they experts at justifying their actions.

To be fair, that's not an exclusively teen affliction ;)

I'm something of an expert at that form of rationalisation* :)

(and have the scars to prove it)

*"Don't knock rationalisations! I don't know anyone who could get through the day without two or three juicy rationalisations. They're more important than sex."

"Ah, come on. Nothing's more important than sex!"

"Oh yeah? Ever gone a week without a rationalisation?"

no. 5, 10 minutes at best.

as to the winehouse bitch. who the fuck cares. some minor celeb fucks herself over once too often and croaks. paint me utterly unaffected. if it's somebody who's shit i really like, say cohen, then i'd be sort of sad cause there'll be no more of their stuff coming out, but that's it. i don't fucking waste emotions on strangers, i save those for people i know.

windchymes -> RE: How does it affect you? (7/24/2011 10:05:02 AM)

I am pretty much unaffected, too. This chick's singing voice was unique, but there are tens of thousands of good singers in the world (probably more than that) looking for their big break, too. She was a train wreck from the git-go. As far as I'm concerned, she took the chance that was given her and ungratefully spit it back in everyone's faces.

In a week or two, when all the post-funeral hype quiets down, maybe the media and entertainment exec's can focus on someone more deserving.

Shit like that makes me GLAD I don't have fame, big money, or status. Nor any of my most loved ones. I've seen up close and personal what it does to people. Especially people that get it very early in life. It fucks them up. They are product, not human, to most. Yet very few can or will, tell them NO. Most artists are 'different' and often more suspeptible to self destruction.......based upon those I've known and know.

To think fame and fortune is the road to happiness and contentment, is a VERY foolish dream.

While I don't know her personal situation my view on the subject is that she obviously didn't have it all. She may have had money and fame, but obviously her personal life was a mess as played out in the tabloids. There is a reason they say money can't buy happiness. It makes life easier, but just because you have money doesn't mean you will have the things that will make you happy.

My aunt and I just had a very personal conversation today about youth, adulthood, and doing the things in life that will make you happy versus being well off. Basically enriching your life to the fullest. She admitted some things that if she had the chance she would do all over again. We talked of my upcoming 30th b-day and the fact that I am still young and how if I'm feeling unhappy with certain aspects of my life how it's my responsibility to step up and change it while I still have the time instead of continuing to make excuses or live in a "comfortable" situation just because it's easy. She asked me what was stopping me from doing the things I wanted to do like leaving a job I hate, traveling the world etc.... I said I get paid very well, the dogs, and I live comfortably. I said there is so much pressure to be responsible save for retirement etc..It's very hard to leave that behind for the unknown. She basically in gentler terms told me I was stupid. I was just making excuses. She said you have 30 years ahead of you to make a living go out and live your life now!! I digress from the original point, but I felt this conversation fit in with the topic at hand. Basically the nuts and bolts of the conversation was at some point you have to be an adult and step up and take responsibility for your actions, life, and decisions. If YOU are unhappy then YOU need to stop YOUR bitching and do something about it. Don't just sit there wondering what if! How this ties in is that this was Amy's decision to live her life in such a manner. She had help, support, and people that cared about her. Still she chose that path for her life. Of course for every decision there is an action. Sometimes the consequences are good and sometimes they are bad.

Her death? Not at all. For one thing there is so much going on in the world that her death doesn't really register. For another I don't have this fascination with celebrities that so many people have.
