It means you're wearing cheap ass rings that aren't made of silver or gold.

Yep... I get allergies from rings that are not sterling silver and oddly enough also low grade gold, but green is usually a sign that it's copper and it's corroding, I think it's called verdigris.

Makes sense because I think the French word for green is verdi. But yes, old people know that if your skin turns green it is copper, not gold. I would think the color of the metal would give it away but apparently some jewelers know how to make a nice looking alloy.

It means you have gangrene and should cut off your finger.

What?

Seriously though, LP is right.  It could also mean you got silver/gold-plated jewelry and the plating has worn off so the base metal underneath is oxidizing.

Going quick reply here since several have raised the same issue:

*short version* Nickel causes that for some people but not all - no way to be sure if your Daddy is going to be one of them without an allergy test or putting the thing on him.

*long jewelery-nerd version*
The likelihood is that the people leaving reviews are experiencing a nickel allergy - nickel is a common alloying material for all jewelery, and will appear in virtually all gold (24 carat gold being 95% gold) and most silver and platinum (the highest grade platinum typically used in jewelery being PT95, again 95% pure). Larger concentrations, naturally, have a higher instance of allergic response and indicate a lower purity, which is to say quality, of precious metal. That said, there is no ring which has enough nickel in it to guarantee that response - the reviewers just all happen to have the allergy. Many could coat themselves in the stuff and never experience that reaction.

It does bear mention, in defense of the OPs jeweler, that there is such a thing as an allergy to both silver and gold. In fact, of metals commonly used (gold, silver, platinum, nickel, cadmium, etc.) the only one which has no recorded instances of allergic responses is titanium. This is why it's used in surgical implants and part of why it is gaining traction in the jewelery market, especially for men. However, this is almost certainly not that as a discoloration response as described is highly unlikely - almost always it will take the form of dermatitis, a reddening and swelling of the skin, blisters, or itching.

Just wasn't sure if the French term is also used in English and for the life of me could only think of the French, Italian and German word for it but not the English...

So when having verdigris, verderame and Grünspan....

Termy, the French word for green is verte, verde is Italian

Nickle just gives me nasty blisters, I even react to jeans buttons so I got felt glued on the back of all my jeans... Even when they call it non-allergic, I break out, oddly enough never happens with Sterling silver or Platinum...

As for Titanium, only got a lighter from that, Dupont made a James Bond edition of their lighters and I used to collect them, they do make the most awesome clicks if you open and close them and I really like most of their designs, never went for their gold ones though, and while I tend to lose regular lighters by the truck load, never managed to lose a Dupont one (and a quick knock on wood)

Yep, I'd go for something in titanium. Very light, very strong, and oddly warm to the touch. I was given a titanium necklace for my last birthday. I've never felt the need to take it off - and I'm someone who usually can't stand wearing jewellery of any kind.

Just call it a collar and you'd never take it off

A friend of mine at the time made me a ring made out of 3 metals in her shop class, and it turned my finger green. Didn't hurt or nothing, but it was ugly.

A lot of metals react with air, sweat and all that...
