Last ring I bought myself was a 40 dollar ring, I wear it 24/7 and it's never marked me or coroded or nothing, and it's been on my finger 24/7 now for about 4 years.

mnottertail -> RE: WHat does it mean when rings turn your finger green? (7/24/2011 2:20:40 PM)

a ring that turns your finger green is worth less than 10 bucks.

Don't read any further in this thread... You'd better not waste any time, and get yourself out there to resolve all your diferences, tell your loved ones that you love them... and change your underwear.

You don't have long.

Hurry!

There was an awesome ring on eBay I wanted to buy Daddy but the revises on it said it left green rings on their fingers.

It's a chemical reaction between the acids in the skin and the metal in the ring. Lotions and other products on the hands can cause the same reaction.

Going quick reply here since several have raised the same issue:

*short version* Nickel causes that for some people but not all - no way to be sure if your Daddy is going to be one of them without an allergy test or putting the thing on him.

*long jewelery-nerd version*
The likelihood is that the people leaving reviews are experiencing a nickel allergy - nickel is a common alloying material for all jewelery, and will appear in virtually all gold (24 carat gold being 95% gold) and most silver and platinum (the highest grade platinum typically used in jewelery being PT95, again 95% pure). Larger concentrations, naturally, have a higher instance of allergic response and indicate a lower purity, which is to say quality, of precious metal. That said, there is no ring which has enough nickel in it to guarantee that response - the reviewers just all happen to have the allergy. Many could coat themselves in the stuff and never experience that reaction.

It does bear mention, in defense of the OPs jeweler, that there is such a thing as an allergy to both silver and gold. In fact, of metals commonly used (gold, silver, platinum, nickel, cadmium, etc.) the only one which has no recorded instances of allergic responses is titanium. This is why it's used in surgical implants and part of why it is gaining traction in the jewelery market, especially for men. However, this is almost certainly not that as a discoloration response as described is highly unlikely - almost always it will take the form of dermatitis, a reddening and swelling of the skin, blisters, or itching.

I have had "pure" sterling jewelry and had it turn my finger green. Hadn't nothing to do with the quality of the ring.

I have also had cheap gold plated rings as a kid that turned my finger green.

I don't wear sterling silver or cheap gold.

I also can't wear digital watches, they stop working on my wrist. Also didn't matter about the cost.

It means the rings aren't as awesome as you and the seller may think they are -- they are cheap costume type jewelry.   If your skin is prone to having your skin turn green -- i wouldn't waste the money and instead tell your man to put the money aside so he can buy you sime pretty real gold or silver rings.

Angel, I'd rather have fabric than rings hehe.

Yep, I'd go for something in titanium. Very light, very strong, and oddly warm to the touch. I was given a titanium necklace for my last birthday. I've never felt the need to take it off - and I'm someone who usually can't stand wearing jewellery of any kind.

Just call it a collar and you'd never take it off [;)]

I swear we were thinking the very same thing.

Aneirin -> RE: WHat does it mean when rings turn your finger green? (7/24/2011 5:32:29 PM)

But the wearers of jewellery have to ask themselves why is it they wear it, is it portable wealth or adornment. As a jewellery designer/maker I go along the lines of adornment and that because the idea of jewellery is to attract attention from others to oneself, perhaps even part of the mating game as the traditional jewellery items are often placed in such parts of the body that they attract attention to certain features of the body, features that have changed in importance through time.

So, that being said, what exactly is wrong with copper, for copper is useful and a popular alloying ingredient in the more noble metals and that because of what characteristics it imparts on the more noble metals, durability being one of those attributes, as what is the point of wrapping your finger in pure gold if you are to watch the metal scrape away to be lost on everything that metal comes into contact with, think lead and know pure gold in terms or durability.

But before anyone condemns copper, know this, copper is rising in value due to the Chinese, to a point where it is known the Chinese have bought land purely on speculation there is copper present.

But as others have said, the green is due to copper present and that metal's intimacy with the human skin and all that that the important toxin elimination organ that skin is expels.

barelynangel -> RE: WHat does it mean when rings turn your finger green? (7/24/2011 5:32:48 PM)

Well there ya go, ditch a ring that may turn your finger green and put it towards some fabric.

It means that there is copper in it and that it rusts because of the sweat.

Aneirin -> RE: WHat does it mean when rings turn your finger green? (7/24/2011 5:39:55 PM)

Rust being another name for oxidisation, but rust is more commonly associated with ferrous metals, although the action is the same.

Rust from the root meaning red

$109 for a ring that's copper with some plating?  Pass.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: WHat does it mean when rings turn your finger green? (7/24/2011 7:24:23 PM)

yeah, sad too cause it would of been a cool addition to our hp lovecraft themed item collection. But there's other awsome things to add to our collection.

Eye glasses have done the same thing for me.   The titanium-  ...look at the arm near the ear.

I think tou should go to school, get a degree, and then you could buy a nice ring instead of a piece of crap on e-bay. You won't have to worry about your finger turning green.

A lot of people get that.
As this thread might have lost ebay a sale of a ring, would it be worth mentioning that there's a few Chinese sellers on there selling old fashioned mechanical watches of the type you wind up? I'd imagine somebody over there has either got hold of some old tooling to manufacture the things, or bought out a bankrupt watchmaker's patents. Either way, you probably won't have to worry about a mechanical watch dying because it doesn't like the amount of static you have about your person, or whatever.

Incorrect. Sterling silver is part copper and the process of soldering can often leave copper oxides on the surfact. Even if they are cleaned off copper oxide can still develop. same with anything less than 24k gold. Even 18k can turn fingers green.
