The Re-enactment of The Battle of Bull Run( or as the Rebs called it First Manassas) has been a boon for the northern Virginia town which like the rest of the nation has been suffering from the tight economy.

Large crowds showed up despite the triple digit heat.Reenacting the battle while spectators gawked is of course apropos ....the original battle was treated as spectator sport in 1861.
The Civil War seems to have, and will probably always hold this nation in thrall....the great American tragedy can still draw huge numbers

First Battle of Bull Run 150 year anniversary

I doubt many of us will be around for the second 150th anniversary....

Mike, I am a Civil war freak. Hubby and i generally make an annual trip to Gettysburg with a van full of nieces, nephews, various offspring, ears plugs and flying food...causing poor Jim to attempt to buy a civil war helmet for the drive home.

We live in an area which was the main route for the soldiers on their way to Gettysburg and this is the cause for hubby and i to have a battle of our own. We have an old, brittle pear tree in our yard which really needs to come down by a professional before it is brought down by mother nature. He wants to get it over with, but i have a mental image of the soldiers picking the pears as they walked by. In its day the tree had to be glorious and there is no doubt they sat under the branches.

Just my tiny lil part of history.....

Holly,I too am a civil war freak..and have been so since my youth.Growing up reading about the Army of Northern Virginia and it's gallant General Lee.Of course as an adult I recognized that that gallantry was in service t o a hideous institution and that the wars outcome was preordained...and yet my imagination always could envision three days in Pennsylvania where Lee acted with the audacity he was known for.....maneuvered instead of ordering a frontal assault.Heeded Longstreet rather than plunging Picket towards destinies call.
Splitting my time as I do between New York and North Carolina....I drive past many a historic battlefield ...always promising myself a more sedate trip where I stop and take in a field or two.Perhaps someday I will actualy do so...I do know I owe it to myself to do it...before they turn all of these historic sites into shopping malls.
