Addressing your post, as well as will's:

This would very likely be true.

However, I think that would only be the short term result (although "short-term" could be a decade or two). In the long term, the party which remained most unified would pick up substantial control, and overplay their hand. This always seems to happen. The "new" party would evolve into an acceptable alternative. This has happened a couple of times in US history, already.
