windchymes -> USPS releases list of post offices slated to close (7/26/2011 3:00:04 PM)

Here is a link to the list of those closing, by state:
http://about.usps.com/news/electronic-press-kits/expandedaccess/statelist.htm

And the original article:

Just want to add, this was announced as "ARE closing" on the network news I'm listening to, as well as in the headlines of some online articles I saw. Other articles say "to be considered" for closing. So don't quote me.

I have noticed since the economy has gone soft that the volume of junk mail I get is way down. I bet that it hurting the USPS. An ex was a USPS manager. I once commented that they must hate junk mail and she quickly corrected me and indicated that junk mail was a money maker for the USPS.

Netflix might be the only thing keeping them alive!

Here's the actual announcement made today by the USPS.

"... the U.S. Postal Service announced today that it will be taking the next step in right-sizing its expansive retail network by conducting studies of approximately 3,700 retail offices to determine customer needs."

A friend of mine works as a distribution center for the state, they LOATHE those darn netflix mailers because every single one of them has to be sorted by hand so it takes longer and costs more.

I suppose one of these days the mail will really be more or less obsolete - or the USPS will stop being a self funded company and more so an actual government agency.

The USPS started out as a government agency, but hasn't been one for years. I checked for my state and know there are a few names left off that list. The are actually doing a nation wide overhaul on a level most people don't know about.

I'm not surprised they're closing Fishs Eddy, that's more of a wide spot in the road than a real town. They closed one in a town near us a couple of years ago but it was more of a substation than a full post office.
