Owner59 -> Tea Party Dying Out?.......Looks Like It. (7/27/2011 10:05:18 PM)

http://www.addictinginfo.org/2011/07/27/tea-party-dying-out/

As the manufactured debt crisis continues to be dominated by radical Tea Party politicians, it is becoming clear that the actual Tea Party supporters and members are rapidly declining in numbers and power. In Washington DC, the “American Grassroots Coalition” organized a rally with some right-wing heavy hitters like Presidential candidate Herman Cain, Sens. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Mike Lee of Utah. It has the making of a “big moment” for the movement. With its obsessive focus on cutting the budget no matter the damage, holding the country hostage to the debt ceiling should be a perfect time for their ideology.

But across the country, evidence is mounting that the tea party is fizzling out and today is no different. The politicians began to look nervous on capitol hill when they showed up to a groundswell of 15 silent members standing around. As the facade began, reports note that no more than 50 people were in attendance. Coupled with similar results recently, including the embarrassing dozen-strong at a Nikki Haley event in Tea party owned South Carolina, I think it’s safe to say that people are either beginning to figure out the mess they voted for last November or the corporate funds seem to have been diverted somewhere more sinister"

They've been absorbed by the Republican party.

Interesting ... and Palin's attempts at box office success drew the same derisory numbers too ....

So far, the antics of the Tea Party people in Washington are mirroring the antics a similar group of right wing simpletons here.* 11 of them managed to get elected to the 89-member Queensland Parliament here about a decade ago. Leaderless, policy-less and clueless, they quickly degenerated into a fractious rabble. They were turfed out at the next election and are currently enjoying all the benefits of political obscurity.

Here's to history repeating itself! I've got my fingers crossed for you guys! [:D]

I dunno if they're dying out, but they are undergoing transition.

They were elected to bring about immediate change.  They have in fact made a massive change in the GOP, and pretty much made Boehner's position almost untenable - he's supposed to control the GOP, and he can't.  They're being cast as the villains in the debt ceiling mess, when they're simply the most extreme manifestation of the polarization that's been seen at least since Reagan.

Had they opted to work "within the system", they could be making a massive impact in a few election cycles' time, but they've opted for immediate takeover of the system and are simply grinding things to a halt.  The Tea Party as it stands should be irrelevant within five to ten years.  I suspect that its energy might get transferred outside the GOP to the Libertarians, which is its proper home anyway.

Musicmystery -> RE: Tea Party Dying Out?.......Looks Like It. (7/28/2011 6:42:29 AM)

Dying out? They still have a strong voice, and followers, even if events aren't drawing.

But they were naive to political realities of governance, and remain so. Now more than ever the GOP needs moderates, but those moderates have already been purged from the Party. The all or nothing stance the GOP, not just the Teas, are following has rendered and is going to continue to render them ineffective and out of the ultimate solutions (or at least directions, for those who oppose those solutions), as it did with health care and in fact the rather large amount of legislation accomplished by last Congress, while this one sits on its hands primarily.

The GOP is setting itself up to get burned on this badly, just as they did in '95, only worse. They are already damaged as it stands. But the GOP has built itself a base that includes myopic focus on irrational goals, and they're stuck with it.

Perhaps, in a few years, moderates will once again win their primaries. Until then, just as they did 2000-2006, they're likely to push all the harder, believing staying the course will help them ultimately prevail, until voters hand them their asses wholesale.

This time, though, that will have to happen from within the right. Should be an interesting journey.

More damage has been done to Obama so far, who has once again exposed how weak and ineffectual he is. Progress wasnt made on the debt talks before he got involved, and got even worse once he got involved. Once he was removed from the process things started to move. The GOP's focus is on the only possible goals. Obama's early budget speeches were a joke that would have resulted in downgrading our debt immediately.

The GOP, if they handle it properly the next 3 days, will be quite happy with what they are "stuck with".

If, and I doubt it.

Time will tell.

I find it amusing that you take the GOP's side like a loyal mutt in EVERY thread so far, regardless of how silly making a defense for the GOP would be. You blame the President on things that are not even his fault, and NEVER credit him, where credit is due (i.e. taking down Osama bin Laden). In fact, your so conditioned to attack the President, that the lengths you go (insulting him like a 12 year old) do more to undermind the message and its credibility.

Really? Isn't the PRIMARY goal to get a bill that BOTH sides agree to? That would IMPLY Republicans coming to the table with tax increases. Because the Democrats aren't going to just do spending cuts and obey the Republicans (who are the MINORITY in Goverment right now) The economists are siding with the President and Democrats on this one: It'll take BOTH tax increases and spending cuts to solve the problem. Unfortunately, Republicans can't raise taxes because they have pledged their loyalty to a Mr. Norquiest and his 'Americans for Tax Reform' OVER the people in their own state/district.

The GOP's focus is not based on reality nor concern for Americans at large. The Tea Party folks are really doing huge amounts of damage with their 'let the country default' motto. Americans will remeber this crap at the next election, willbeurdaddy! So ask yourself how badly you want the Democrats to fully control two branchs of the US Goverment.....

I find it amusing that you take the GOP's side like a loyal mutt in EVERY thread so far, you have selective memory. I am often critical of the GOP, although moreso when they were in office. regardless of how silly making a defense for the GOP would be. You blame the President on things that are not even his fault, such as? and NEVER credit him, where credit is due (i.e. taking down Osama bin Laden). wrong again, he just is so rarely deserving of credit you dont remember them In fact, your so conditioned to attack the President, that the lengths you go (insulting him like a 12 year old) do more to undermind the message and its credibility. Your butchering of the English language undermines yours....if you had any to start with. You are one of the biggest idealogues here, spouting anti-GOP rhetoric constantly. Get your own fucking house in order and dont worry about others'

[color=#0066CCthats right, and why youll see a GOP majority in both houses of congress and very likely a new POTUS] So ask yourself how badly you want the Democrats to fully control two branchs of the US Goverment..... I'd say wait until Nov of 2012 and then you'll know for sure.

Yeap, Democrats retake the House, hold the Senate and White House, and make a move or two in the US Supreme Court. And the DNC will have to send the GOP a 'Thank You' card signed by 'the gang'. [:D]

I'll give you 3:1 on the first, even money on the second, and take 8:5 on the third.

You can offer whatever odds you want: but given that you're unlikely to pay up, all you're achieving by doing so is wasting everybody's time.
