erieangel -> Small business owner says consumption = job creation (7/28/2011 6:20:09 PM)

Last night, Ed Shultz (yes that left wing nut case on MSNBC) played an audio clip of somebody who had called into his radio program. Here it is:

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I am a small business owner. Most years, I make over 250,000 dollars a year. And you know, Republicans keep on saying they can‘t tax the wealthy. They‘re the job creators. Ed, they‘re wrong.
As a small business owner, I am not a job creator. The middle class in this country are the real job creators. Those people making 30,000, 40,000, 50,000 a year. Ed, you know, two thirds of our economy is driven by consumption.
That consumption is not being done by the top two percent. It‘s the vast middle class. People listening have to understand that businesses exist to create a profit. You have to make businesses hire by creating demand for their goods and services.
We have a demand problem in our economy, not a cash problem for businesses. Business owners, wealthy people, they don‘t need more cash.

This was pulled from the transcript of The Ed Show which aired on 7/27/2011

This caller made a whole lot of sense. The wealthy have been given tax cuts for how long now?? And the job situation isn't getting any better. The fact is, with so many people out of work, those who do work aren't spending like they used to. Only by putting more and more people to work will the economy improve. Without a demand for goods and services, the economy will continue to stagnant and perhaps this business owner referenced above will lose his business.

And that is exactly why we need to think on a global scale. Produce local, sell global. There are 7 some odd billion consumers on this planet. We should be sending out products to the people who want them and those are not *just* US citizens.

Why dont you tell us for how long. Since the portion of their income that has been paid in taxers by the wealthy has been nearly monotonically increasing youll have to be very creative.

You think we arent sending out products to people who want them? In what industry?

You think we arent sending out products to people who want them? In what industry?

Products which are not yet invented. Innovation and globalization.

Plus, you can't get Best Foods mayo in Italy and there's just something so wrong about that.

I have to agree, it is the middle class who are the real consumers. I work for a small internet business (US only for reasons I won't get into) and most of our customers are middle class folks who purchase from us regularly. Many of these customers are now making smaller orders, and less frequently. The current strain on the economy may well do our business in, as more and more formerly middle class consumers just don't have the extra cash they used to spend on high quality products like ours.

To paraphrase something I said in another thread, what good does it do to produce a million refrigerators/ cars/ air conditioners when 500,000 won't sell because people can no longer afford to buy them? The death of the middle class in the US is the death of a huge market, and the death knell for many small businesses.

If only! I stopped using mayo while we lived in Italy and just made things that I could use with spicy brown mustard. I have to say while the choices for typical American products is extremely limited or simply unavailable the cheese selection blew my mind. On that front.. it is heavenly!

Just because the 'unidentified employer' isn't creating jobs doesn't mean other employers are not. I call BS on the Ed Schultz caller.

oh for fuck's sake you are all so fucking blinded by your mindless partisan animosity that you can't even admit when somebody from the opposition says something your fucking ideology preaches. of course consumption creates jobs, and of course its the middle class that does the majority of the consuming. where the fuck do you think those rich fuckers get all that money you don't want to tax? i completely fail to see how you can disagree with that with a straight face.

no wonder i stay out of this idiot bin most of the time, i hear better quality debates between preschoolers discussing which brand of pull up is better.

What he was saying apparently flew right over your head; pity.
If you would just discard the partisan glasses for a minute you might see his point, which is that no business can create jobs without consumers willing to purchase their products. It is consumers that ultimately drive business and, at least in the US, most of those consumers are the rapidly disappearing middle class.

So, if you don't agree with someone's politics, they can't be saying anything true?

Your disdain for something, wilbur, is to Me a ringing endorsement of its veracity as you have failed to post much of anything except utter bullshit.

Marc2b -> RE: Small business owner says consumption = job creation (7/29/2011 8:03:04 AM)

Consumption does not create jobs. Consumption maintains currently existing jobs. Demand creates jobs.

A business starts or expands because of a demand for product or service (gee, I’d really like a pizza). If they succeed (hey, that’s good pizza), then the consumption of that product or service keeps the job going long enough (here’s your money for the pizza) to meet the next demand (I’d like another pizza).

Hell yeah!

The consumer markets are almost 3/4 of all economic activity, here.

The con model of giving a huge free ride to the wealthy in hopes that it`ll "trickle down" is now proven debunked and discredited.

Put that money in the hands of consumers and it`ll get spent here in the states, instead of financing businesses to export it and our jobs over-seas.

But, marc, wouldn't you agree that a decrease in consumption will lead to backlogs of inventory and thus a shut down of manufacturing with LOSS of jobs?

Wouldn't it be reasonable then to suggest the converse is true? That increased consumption would lead to increased demand and opening of new manufacturing lines and thus creation of new jobs.

and thats where we need to draw the line between small business and large corporations.

One produces and is an economic engine, the other is a nation sucking leech.
