Maybe in the north, it is.  I used to be a NY'er and grinned to myself when I heard words like that.  Now that I'm in the south for +35 years words like  "ya'll", "yonder", "down-the-road-a-piece", and all the southern slang that I've picked up and use regularly when talking casually is just a lazy way (and comfortable) way to say what you want to.  It may not be proper or formal talk when talking to professional people, but even parents of a tea party person, in their own home, saying it, tells me they are just southerners, telling someone "they can all run along with their misquotations", with "southern hospitality".  [8D]

I might be willing to consider that she didn't mean it as a codeword.  However, since she is from Cincinnati (which is on the "y'all" border), and a DC "young professional", I suspect that it is indeed a codeword for yokel.

Firm;

On one past visit from my sister and BIL and their two kids to Atlanta from Ilinois, where they both were born and raised, my at-the-time 9 yr. old niece asked  me; "Uncle Ed, what do some people mean when they say "y'all"?

She and her brother never miss an opportunity for snark (they are both really sharp kids and I love them), and I detected at least some minor element of that behind the question, but I proceeded in disappointingly boring fashion.

I asked her; "If you and your brother were standing in front of me, and I said 'do you want to go to the store with me,' how do you know if I am talking to just you, or just your brother, or the both of you?"

After her eyes turning down and doing the internal processing, five seconds later, she said; "OK uncle Ed, I know why people say 'y'all' now."

Those two word explain a lot.  That's where you keep going wrong over and over.  You insist on reading what you think into everything.

Suspect? The proof would meet even the misunderstood legal standard of "without a shadow of a doubt".

Oh please.

I disagree with Firm's politics almost (not quite) as much as you do.

But you are from Louisiana and yet disavow the invocation of 'yokel' or some variant by way of whatever snark at nearly every opportunity by the national media or Hollywood?

Watch a movie or something.

That statement is simple idiocy.

Edwynn -> RE: No bias here (7/30/2011 11:03:51 PM)

Not having awareness that Obama's mother had already passed on 13 years before he came to office also indicates the idiocy involved here, but you have to understand the overt pride in idiocy that people like servantforuse or sanity or wilbe have as basis and mainstay to their existence and fall all over themselves to display at every opportunity.

I dont know how to break this to you Ed

Very few people care enough about O'Bummer to know off the top of their head when his mom kicked it

You see, not everyone idolizes O'Bummer like you do

trufax.

Sanity -> RE: No bias here (7/31/2011 10:40:01 AM)

Had O'Bummer been a Conservative president there is little doubt thats exactly how the far left spin would have gone

After all, its taken right out of the Bush Derangement Syndrome playbook
