Is it a fashion or a state of mind ?

I ask is it a state of mind because I know some pretty old goths, yet as a fashion, it seems to be fashionable with the young

But as a fashion or a mindset, it does seem to becoming more fashionable as the years go by, as if memory serves me well, when I was in my teens, I was the only goth in the village, now ut seems gothy looks are everywhere. Way back then black was my colour and different was my clothing, I tended and still do like what could be referred to as a rennaisance style.

I think for the most part, fashion IS combined with a mindset, isn't it? We view ourselves as "classy", "chic", "preppy" (that might be an 80's state of mind), "bohemian", "laid-back" and act & dress accordingly.

I personally, since I'm *cough* over 50, have a "comfort over fashion" mindset, and don't put as much importance on how I look as I used to, or as a lot of people half my age seem to. So, I don't wear heels with my jeans, don't worry about make-up as much, carry a practical purse, not a designer bag, and so on. I know how to, and I like to see it on other people, but it's just not important to me anymore. Of course, if the situation warrants it, I do, just not for everyday business.

Based on friends my kids had while still in school, I think the "Goths" had their own mindset, sort of "I don't follow the crowd".....so they followed each other, lol. Or "Life sucks, I'm going to eat worms", etc. I think most of them grew out of it, though.

It's an aesthetic that influences fashion, home decor, music, literature and embracing things that are considered dark and/or macabre as a natual part of the cycle of life.  Most of the younger generation looks at the black clothing and think that's all it takes to be goth.  Even then, they don't understand that the fashion is just one aspect of the self-expression that goes into being goth.  A black Marilyn Manson t-shirt and dyed black hair doesn't make a person Goth.  Someone can wear pink and black striped stockings or neon orange cyberlox and still fall under the umbrella of Goth.  It's not just the clothes that make the Goth, it's the total package.

As far as current fashion trends are concerned, I'm not sure it's Goth.  It's more of a return to the 80s hair metal (black leather, chains, metal studs, etc.) or even beatnik style.

It's a type of music. Everything else, great as it is, is just the icing on the cake.

I was a hippy goth punk, makes no sense but then often I dont anyway, very bohemian, never went with a mohawk, but did dye my hair all the colours of the rainbow and spent a fortune on hair spray but not into the emo stuff so much, I never could find the clothing I wanted because I was a fat chick so made much of my own, of course there was that whole time I basically wore a box of bin liners n safety pins for a month, I had this beautiful black velvet jacket that I practically wore holes in (cost me a fortune in makeup tho).
A mix of tastes for me, back in the mid 70s tho in the UK, I did all the punk stuff half the week and was a ballroom dancing canoeist the rest, who did disco. I went from wearing pixie boots to four inch stilletoes in hours.

I'm a closet Goth, my pajamas are black.

The real problem with me and Goth is, other than it didn't exist when I was a teenager, is I really don't do jewelry - I like it, I just don't wear it, so I'd be kind of a stark goth, more like Johnny Cash.

A mildly humorous introduction to the various sub-genres of Goth:

http://www.blackwaterfall.com/viewall.php

I tend to fall into the Romantic, Victorian and Corporate subgenres most of the time.  I go Cybergoth, Fetish or Steampunk on occasion.  Which Goth are you?

Hm, like these Goths?
(i know, i know... bad joke is bad. But i had to, sorry.)

As per the link Syl posted, i think i tend to adore the Victorian, Romantic and a bit of Steampunk fashions from time to time. Ooh, and Medieval, too.
