"was there some bizarre cosmic event last night the kicked the earth like a million miles closer to the sun" Actually yes, if you study the Earth's orbit aroung Sol, it is not actually spherical. This has caused global warming IMO and the trend is about to reverse I think. So when you pay for those carbon credits they will say how well it worked, but in reality it will have been the hand of Mother Nature, just going about her normal business. And this is no abberation, these climactic changes are part and parcel of what developed what we call life on this planet. Some of it is actually intelligent believe it or not. But the next trend is going to cool off- I THINK the southern hemisphere and that will change the ocean currents, and then the air currents. However no matter where you live on the north/south axis, it will still always be better to live on the western coasts of land masses. That is because the Earth will still rotate the same way. I found good info on this on wiki, but you have to subnavigate to a certain word, down in "related links" that explains this phenomenon in detail. The fact that matters is that right now the Earth is closest to Sol in January, and this is changing. This is on a long cycle, and there's not a goddamn thing Al Gore can do about it. Maybe I'll look it up again if I get bored. T^T
