I have always connected this statement to the wish for the quality of
things from years past, like automobiles, or clothing, or homes.

However, today I saw (for the 100th time) a commerical for 5 hour energy
drink, where it showed a woman complaining that she can barely make it
through her 8 hour work day with enough energy to cook dinner when she got
home, or the image of a man falling asleep during an afternoon meeting.

Wasn't it just yesterday that we were all up at the crack of dawn, working the farm
till the sun went down, and then having to walk the 20 miles home? Barefoot too!

Man, they sure don't make us like they used to.

The issue is actually very likely related to lack of sufficient sleep. http://www.cdc.gov/Features/dsSleep/

I was reading yesterday that "the average adult sleeps only 6.9 hours during the week, and 7.9 on the weekend—20 percent less than in 1900". However, the author of the best selling book failed to cite the source of the study so you can take or leave that figure.

That was before they invented energy drinks.

Cheri, that doesn't make sense, what does that have to do with it, she's saying that people didn't need energy drinks back then.

Exactly!

Huh?? If we didn't need them before, how come we need them now?

Simple. We didn't need them because nobody had told us we needed them.

Echoes of Summer's Eve or what, eh?

I agree, lack of sleep combined with poor nutrition.

I eat good, but my workdays start at 4:15 in the morning, and end at 7 at night. Some of those days I head to the gym, but most I try to pass out early. But either way, when I get up at 4 in the morning, I've got a 5 hour right there waiting for me.

As LadyAngelika stated I think it's the lack of sleep factor. Back then people actually got a full 8 hours of sleep, going to bed at sunset and waking upon sunrise. My mom used to tell me stories of going to bed at 8pm every night and waking at 5am to go and chop down wood for the papermill and then going home to have to work the farm for huckstering the next day. It was a lot of hard strenuous work but they slept well.

Whereas our generation is lucky if they get a full 6 hours of sleep a night, working well past 9pm some nights. Without enough sleep it takes a toll on your body physically and mentally.

littlewonder, they also generally got more physical exercise. Physical exercise not only gives more energy, but it also enables one to sleep better.

Yes, the sleep is a factor, I'm sure. I also remember in a college sociology class being floored that , even with all of today's modern conveniences, women (yes, it was women) spend more hours a week on housework than ever before. That's because our standards have risen so greatly. For example, we now wear clothes only once before laundering, or our houses are bigger, floors aren't made of dirt, etc...Add that to the fact that we now have added working outside of the home to those increased expectations for cleanliness within the home...no wonder I'm exhausted.

That's where sissy maids come in handy!

This is something I didn't take into consideration. Thank you Kaliko!
I had always thought that it was because of the modern day conveniences
that our generation seems to have become a little less motivated.
I have often thought how I would love to go back to simpler times, if it was easy to do so.

"I agree, lack of sleep combined with poor nutrition."

When I was about twenty, I would work eight hours, go to the bar, get some food and drink all night. It was mandatory for bars to close at 2:30 AM, some 1:00 AM. So with these people I might be there until 4:00 AM because nobody gave a shit what you're supposed to do. Then I would be up at eight the next morning and have no problems.

When you are a fetus your Mother's body gives you all the nutrients you need. When you are that small it doesn't kill her, but now with the poor nutritional content of food, this results in nausea (morning sickness), aches and pains as well as gestational diabetes for her. And a few other maladies. When you are small you only need so many millgrams of this and that, when you grow you use up these stored resources as the umbuilical cord is no longer attached.

As you age in an evironment with poor soils and all that which is the cause of these deficiencies, which are exaserbated by commecial food production, you become prone to diseases. Some of these are directly caused by the deficiencies while other are caused by an ineffictive immune system.

We lose out tin and zinc, which adversely affects our hair growth and hearing. We lose our chromium and vanadium which leaves our pancreas unable to produce insulin resulting in diabetes. We get enough calcium but it doesn't work without magnesium, manganese, phosphorous and a couple other things which causes osteoporosis of which tooth decay is one form. And then the unused calcium in our system deposits in the form of stones in the gall bladder, kidneys or elsewhere.

Even the worst cholesterol in the world is completely harmelss, if it has something with which to combine, rather than forming arterial plaque.

I am more into this than most people think. But at this point in my life I am no longer eveangelical about it. People will not listen. And it is true that I offer my conclusions. I will just do what I do and we will see who laughs last.

All I know is last visit to the doc having had a full workup, they said I could easily live to be 100. I'm not the toughest MF in the world, but my plumbing works correctly. They said that, not me.

If you want me to expound on this with details, just say so. But I'm not going to try to shove it down anyone's throat.

The barn manager at the stable where my kid learned to ride works from morning to night without any break except lunch. The fascinating thing is that he accomplishes this by never hurrying. No matter what he's doing, he's never out of breath. He works at a pace that can be kept up for hours.

Today we're always in a rush. And that is exhausting.

Most of us don't have a lot of physical exercise anymore, most jobs tend to be desk jobs, we eat overly processed food and our bodies just haven't adjusted to the rather sudden changes in life-style (rather sudden in terms that our life-styles changed in decades)

I tend to get in a slump around 2 or 3 in the afternoon, but my days start at 6am (preparing myself and my family for our respective days, then packing lunches, cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc) and then I work second shift until 11pm or 12am, it's about 50 minutes to get home and then I start it over the next day.  I'm not saying it's the same for everyone, but I just plain don't get enough sleep!
It's going to be even worse when we go for another Baby!
