I think this is awesome.

"Iron Bowl" ticket winners taken for a ride to jail

Video

"If you're a college football fan in Alabama, there could scarcely be happier news than hearing that you've won tickets to the Iron Bowl, the annual hate-fest between Auburn and Alabama that many consider the most heated rivalry in sports.
But there could hardly be anything worse than finding out that not only are you not really going to the game, you're going to jail instead. It happened last week in Lee County, Ala., when a dozen people who had been notified that they won tickets showed up to claim their prizes, only to be arrested by  sheriff's deputies for failure to pay child support, the Opelika-Auburn News reported.
At least a dozen scofflaws were arrested and taken to the Lee County jail, Sheriff Jay Jones told the newspaper. In all, the suspects were more than $270,000 in arrears, officials said."

I sympathize with their aim, I'm just not entirely comfortable with their methods.

I am all for it. I think it was a great ploy!

Sorry I have zero sympathy for deadbeat parents. I know way too many from where I grew up.

The only thing that would have made it better was to have the kids mothers dressed in cheerleader uniforms and waving pom-poms as the deadbeats were hauled off to jail.

Only problem with that is that it still doesn't get the child support paid and now the taxpayers are supporting the deadbeats (and possibly the kids too)

My thoughts exactly, MasterG2kTR. If it actually works toward solving the problem, maybe it's a decent idea. If all it does is gather them up, wait for them to get bailed out and then start over, what's the point? Empty theatrics I'm afraid.........luci

I'm no expert on this by any means, but I think the intention is to get them all processed, then they let 'em out and attach their wages.  I know a guy who had the pleasure of experiencing something similar (not tricked into showing up).  He owed so much his take home pay will be very little for a very long time.  He complains.  I have no sympathy.  And his kid, now grown, doesn't talk to him.

I'm sure the sheriff's department in Lee County, Alabama would be open to suggestions if you have a better idea. They could always send a squad car with two officers (arrest warrant in hand) and hope that someone doesn't unload a 12 gauge through the door. Wait - then they still end up in jail. Scratch that idea. Maybe we should just be glad that the responsible ones paid their obligations and let the deadbeats go.

You know TFB that some of your posts do not quite indicate that you are a rocket scientist, which you never claimed to be of course, but this one is really a pearl of wisdom. (not sarcastic here)

Think about the people who get an email that they have won the Nigerian lottery or some shit. Or that their Great Uncle or something has passed on and they are going to inherit millions. I can assure you I have no relatives in Africa or some shit. And it didn't start with email either, years ago my buddy Jack got a letter from Nigeria. He knows his heritage and knows it's bullshit, and I bet he still has the letter. We almost busted a gut laughing about it, and I was trying to figure out how to scam the scammer.

What's cool here is that he has nothing in his name, the letter came to his maternal Grandfather, regardless of the fact the guy had been dead for about fifty years.

What really gets me is that the scammers keep on trying. There must be enough stupid people in the world to make it worth their while, one would assume.

But I don't assume anything anymore. Think the sun will rise tomorrow ? I'll believe it when I see it, maybe.
