For the establishment of Zion : the gospel and government of God working in harmony for the improvement and sanctification of all things. The kingdom of heaven on earth.

There are threats much, much closer to home.

So basically the paranoia about Sharia law is as substantive as this?

Aylee -> RE: Whoever's worried about sharia law in the US (8/6/2011 11:26:19 AM)

quote:

The Lord will be our God, and delight to dwell among us, as His own people, and will command a blessing upon us in all our ways, so that we shall see much more of His wisdom, power, goodness and truth, than formerly we have been acquainted with. We shall find that the God of Israel is among us, when ten of us shall be able to resist a thousand of our enemies; when He shall make us a praise and glory that men shall say of succeeding plantations, "may the Lord make it like that of New England." For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us. So that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause Him to withdraw His present help from us, we shall be made a story and a by-word through the world.

They should have stopped that Winthrop bastard at Ellis Island!

And from Governor Christie of New Jersey:

"This Sharia Law Business Is Crap"

quote:

At this juncture, it may be more efficient to highlight which interactions between New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and the media are not newsworthy. The Republican’s appointment of Muslim-American Sohail Mohammed to a state bench this week ruffled some feathers among some who fear the threat of Sharia Law, but when asked about those concerns, Gov. Christie made clear he had no patience for such “ignorance,” calling the complaints “crap.”

“Ignorance is behind the criticism of Sohail Mohammed,” he told a reporter asking about the complaints that he may be inadequate to be a judge because he defended Muslim Americans who were wrongly arrested post-9/11. “He is an extraordinary American who is an outstanding lawyer and played an integral role in the post-September 11th period in building bridges between the Muslim American community in this state and law enforcement,” Gov. Christie argued, adding that he was “disgusted, candidly, by some of the questions he was asked… at the Senate judiciary committee.”

But it was a follow-up question on the fear of Sharia Law that set the governor off. “Sharia Law has nothing to do with this at all, it’s crazy!” he cried. “The guy is an American citizen!” He concluded that this “Sharia Law business is just crap… and I’m tried of dealing with the crazies,” adding with disgust and frustration that “it’s just unnecessary to be accusing this guy of things just because of his religious background.”

A rare occasion that I find myself agreeing with Chris Christie of New Jersey.

Will the Tea Party, who has been his biggest support, now turn on him?

Aswad -> RE: Whoever's worried about sharia law in the US (8/7/2011 2:24:46 AM)

The muttering about short term sharia law is usually paranoia, and certainly so in areas where some integration or restricted immigration is practiced. In the Scandinavian countries, at least, it is poor planning, not a conspiracy, that has given rise to a few areas with a de facto subset of sharia law for people with non-caucasian features (especially women). That is of concern, but purely a political matter, and it will take at least 90 years to gain a majority in any of those areas with current birth rates. Anyone that feels the need to change something, can simply keep a positive population growth rate.

All he's doing is standing on the same ground where rational people usually stand.

He stands there often, which makes a case for rational positions not being your strong suit. I know a lot of tea party folks. None of them have a problem with Christie. In fact, many of them would like to see him run for higher office.

Yes, there are crazies. They exist on both sides of the political spectrum however, and there is little common ground between them. They see no issue in supporting one religion that, doesn't like homosexuality for example, while deriding another for the same stance. Or for attacking a religion for insisting women be subservient while defending another that has the same core ideal.

Amazing isn't it? I think so. It also puts them on the same ground as those they paint as ignorant, if for no other reason, their demonstrated lack of ability to draw parallels.

Well-  I better check to see if Mohammad allows CM to be looked at.

While I have a drink, and look at dirty pics.

Anaxagoras -> RE: Whoever's worried about sharia law in the US (8/7/2011 9:38:20 AM)

I agree the threat is exaggerated in some circles, its obvious that Sharia won't suddenly overturn US law. I think though that most are concerned about it being used in arbitration, and possibly turning into an unofficial but somewhat tolerated legal code in Muslim communities as happened in the UK, where the authorities are now actually bringing in leglislation to ban Sharia courts. I remember a pretty startling article about that by Ayesha Ahmed who is now an Islamic apostate. It isn't so much a failure of integration that allows this to happen in Europe. Rather its seen by many as a consequence of the adoption of multi-culturalism, leading people like Cameron and Merkle to criticise that approach.

While this judge was overturned by the appellate court, I am sure that the plaintiff would disagree with calling it 'just paranoia.' After all, rape and abuse are OKAY if it is cultural.

quote:

We are also concerned that the judge's view of the facts of the matter may have been colored by his perception that, although defendant's sexual acts violated applicable criminal statutes, they were culturally acceptable and thus not actionable — a view that we have soundly rejected.

THE TRIAL COURT ABUSED ITS DISCRETION BY FINDING THAT DEFENDANT LACKED THE REQUISITE INTENT TO COMMIT SEXUAL ASSAULT AND CRIMINAL SEXUAL CONTACT BASED UPON HIS RELIGION.

I don't think anyone in the U.S. is too worried. We have something like 600-800 million guns in private hands in this country.
That's a lot more than all the police depts, militias, and all of the military combined.
And that's the way it should be.

Mormons.

Ya see, Impy there thinks that Muslims should be coddled lest we hurt their feelings and they kill a bunch of people in retaliation (Remember Theo? and what about the cartoons?). However we can poke fun of the Mormons all we want.

Ah but can you stand together when it counts, or will you submerge into fragmentation just like the political parties ?

"Mormons. "

Nope, it is an EXACT quote from the Protocols.

Exact.

Aneirin, it depends on where you live.
In places like Boston, NYC, and Calif the people wouldn't fight back. In South Carolina where I live we already have militias and if they fight everyone  fights.
And not just the men, there are a LOT of women here who own and carry guns and are very good shots!

I wonder if the South Carolina' peasantry's pitchforks are made in China like everything else sold in the US these days? Have pops' revolutionaries stocked up on tar and feathers? Are they local products or imports too?

Can we look forward to UN-imposed pitchfork, tar and feather embargoes? [:D]

Are you expecting a Muslim invasion?

Presumably. Chuck Norris must be slacking off on the job, so it'll be up to Poopey to hold off the Mooslim horde single handed...
