Peon recently posted his 5 favourite free programs:

http://www.collarchat.com/m_3797836/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#3798502

Let's share!
I like Revo UnInstaller to remove all traces of uninstalled programs:
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,66703-order,4/description.html

Recuva, to try to track down lost files:
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,67538-order,4/description.html

And the beautifully named PC Decrapifier:
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,67264-order,1-page,1/description.html

Not a program, but my favourite word website is HowJSay, which includes pronunciations with a dishy Brit accent:
http://www.howjsay.com/

Please share shareware!

Just installed Revo on your advice. Wish I'd had that before: the garbage that uninstalled programs leave behind has always irked me. Ta!

I got two portable graphics progs that are REALLY good. And not only do I have the CORRECT version of Bearshare to get into P2P, i have the CORRECT version of Winrar. VLC is all over the place so there is no reason to even think about it.

If you can shield the math coprocessor I have a kickass poker gsame, if not I have another, one or two. Chess game rated 2000 when run on a 486, who knows now. I only beat it once, want it ? I CAN make it available, say the word.

And you might not know it, but some of your favorite old programs actually still came wih Windows. You just don't know where the fuck they are.

T^T

I have a ton of them, but most are for very specific uses, such as removing specific viruses and so on.

Of the more generic variety I like HijackThis!, a cool little utility that helps you identify and remove BHOs, redirectors, re-installing toolbars and other browsing annoyances hidden in your registry that regular cleaners don't find.

I also like Ulead Gif Animator, it's a really cool and easy to use app that does just what it says it does, see Peon's avatar for an example of what it does.

I also like Freecorder, which is a browser plug-in that lets you grab almost any video and save it to your HDD. It has some pretty powerful conversion options as well.

Open Office..pretty obvious what its for
VLC for all(99%) audio and vid files
CCleaner for cleaning registry altho.... I have been unhappy with the later versions, have to look into hijack this I think.
Visipics for finding replicas of jpgs.
I Like the snipping toool in win7( I think its also in vista?)

Haven't tried many free programmes but 7-Zip is a pretty cool alternative to WinZip.

MalwareBytesAntiMalware (AKA MBAM) is an awesome virus cleaner. It's what we used when I worked on computers and it finds viruses nothing else does, including actual paid programs. It's no substitute for a good AV, since it's solely a cleaner, but still a lifesaver.

I actually don't have much beyond that for people since this thread already listed my other favoridtes. I will leave you with the best screensaver EVER, though: Electric Sheep

I have all 3, and for anything other than a rar file I just use the built in XP zip function. I can't remember why I needed 7 zip, I think I had a bad archive to repair, but I haven't used it since that 1 time.

Some other cool apps....

ffunlock, which will "unlock" files and folders that are locked because they are "in use by another process" and you have nothing open.

hj-split/hj-join, which splits up and reassembles large files for easier transmission

GSpot, which identifies which audio and video codecs are required for a given media file.

I really should fire up my old machine...I had TONS of them on that one.

All of the programs below are freeware:

JetAudio is excellent program for multimedia. To save your albums and playlists, import and export them. Can play any file. Easy controls. I have been using it since I started to use computers.
Lighter version JetVideo is good too.
K-Lite Codec Pack is a very good codec pack.
SyncToy is a very good syncronization and back up program.
ImageShack Uploader is a very easy way to upload images to ImageShack and get the links for them.
3RVX is an audio graphic program (Volume Indicator on Screen) which you can see on the screen when you increase or decrease the audio in different skins.
DosBox is great to use your DOS Programs on Windows.
Dropbox is a nice way to keep your files online and share them with links.
Subtitle Workshop 2.51 is still the best to edit your subtitles. There is a 4 beta version, but I suggest 2.51.
EasyBCD is great to edit your boot configuration. Free version link is at the bottom of the page.
Utorrent is a great lite torrent program. Demonoid and The Pirate Bay are great sites to download torrents.
ManyCam and Splitcam to use your webcam in different applications at the same time.
LogMeIn is a great Remote Control to remote Control a Computer from Internet.
Gmail Checker and Large Notes are good gadgets for Windows.
Comodo Internet Security is a very good Security Program.
Speedtest.net and pingtest.net are good sites where you can check your internet speed and quality. You should have 0% packet loss in pingtest if your connection quality is very good.
MagicDisc is a great virtual disc software.
Tagscanner is a very good tag program for your music.
Jgrasp is great to write Java. Don't forget to get Java SDK if you are going to write Java Programs.
Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express is free and good to write programs.

I'm given to understand that once one has installed utorrent, one can then go to eztv, where one can - I'm led to believe - find and download most TV series from across the world.

However, this enters us into the realms of naughtiness, so I don't feel I can recommend this.

I'm not so sure...it has me located on the Manitoba/Nunavut border near the Caribou River Park rather than in Ottawa. That's over 2000 km off.

For what it's worth, I prefer BitTorrent.
